FRANCONIA, N.H. — The Flume Gorge in New Hampshire’s Franconia Notch is opening for the season, and for the first time in many years, early visitors will be able to walk its entire length.

Usually, ice clings to the gorge’s granite walls far later in the season. But thanks to a mild winter and several warm days, crews were able to install the entire length of boardwalk early.

The Flume is a natural gorge featuring waterfalls, glacial boulders and other scenery. It was discovered in 1808 by a 93-year-old woman looking for a good fishing hole and has since become one of the state’s most popular natural attractions.

It opens for the season on Friday.
