NEWCASTLE, Maine — Investigators are blaming a mechanical failure for a go-cart accident that killed an Anah Temple Shriner last fall during a parade in Maine.
The victim, 59-year-old Marvin Tarbox Jr., died after his go-kart toppled off a ramp and overturned during a stunt on Oct. 8. He was hit by two go-carts following behind.
The Portland Press Herald says Tarbox’s cart overturned because the leading edge made contact with the ramp, causing a weld on the ramp to fail. Lt. Rand Maker of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department says a bent axle or other problem may have caused the cart to sit too low.
Leaders of Maine’s two Shrines say they have good safety records and don’t plan major changes based on the isolated accident during the Damariscotta Pumpkin Fest.

Good no changes. So when you kill some innocent kid wanting to see the parade my lawyer can refer to this article and sue the pants off you (Shiners) and operator for negligence. Ride around, have fun and raise awareness for your good causes. But, the ramp should not be allowed and ordinance in place for such recklessness . I am not blaming the driver the died. I know is was doing this for a group who do good things for those less fortunate. But, how ridiculous not to learn from this tragic incident. Thank goodness THIS TIME no innocent bystanders were killed.

You can say what you want to say but you would be the first standing there blaming another if it is your grandkid spatted on the ground because of reckless manner these are driven in. Mark my words, this will happen and I want you to think of me
Well said ………………….. People should remember the old saying, my Grandfather use to say, “Enjoy the pleasures, accept the liabilities” (of course if everyone did this, ambulance chasing Attorneys would be out of business).
What I’m getting from this information is that truly, there are things that carry the “don’t try this at home…..professionals at work etc” warning for a reason! Even with pros doing these and other stunts, they are dangerous. Knowing that makes watching them even more thrilling for the public and lends more respect for what they are doing. JMHO
It’s hard for most of us to be objective about safety when it comes to the Shriners-they are special. These guys are out there doing some great work for children-much of it at their own expense in dollars spent and time away from their own families. However- some further precautions may be needed- not only for the spectators safety-but for those dedicated individuals that are putting on these terrific shows.
