BANGOR, Maine — During a recent dinner party involving a dozen or so local women, Lisa McKinney, a Democrat who recently moved to Bangor, said she was surprised to learn the women around her didn’t really care about politics, including who should hold the country’s highest office.

“Not one woman was a Democrat. and not one could engage in a conversation about who they supported” for president, McKinney said on Wednesday, just before a Women for Obama initiative was launched in Bangor. “I thought, ‘Where are these women getting their education?’ I mean besides mass media.”

Women for Obama is an initiative to build relationships with supporters new and old and engage communities on issues important to women, a press release about the launch states.

A similar event was held in Portland.

The dinner party inspired McKinney, a graphic designer who owns her own business, to advocate for the re-election of President Barack Obama by educating everyone around her about what he has done to support women’s issues, education, the economy and the middle class.

“They have to understand this is a massive shift that is happening, and it takes time,” she said. “President Obama has our best interests in mind and he understands our economy is the middle class.”

With more people working, the economy is improving, House Minority Leader Emily Cain, a Democrat from Orono, said at the launch, held at the Obama for America — Maine HQ, located at 205 Exchange St.

“We have now seen 26 straight months of increased job growth,” Cain said, attributing the employment numbers to Obama’s efforts.

The president also has signed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, a law requiring equal pay because “everybody should play using the same rules,” and successfully nominated two women to the U.S. Supreme Court, she said.

“We are a vital part of President Obama’s plan,” Cain said.

The state representative also had a few words against presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor who hopes to unseat Obama come November, saying, “his economic plan takes us back” and would put an undue burden on working Americans while only benefiting a select few.

“This election is a make-or-break moment for the middle class,” she said.

Romney is winning the Republican Party’s nomination by running to the extreme right on issues important to women, the press release states, adding he has called Roe v. Wade “one of the darkest moments in Supreme Court history” and has said he would “get rid of” Planned Parenthood.

When Romney spoke in Boston on Tuesday, he said the president has not kept his promises to the American people.

“The reduction in the unemployment rate is due entirely to the fact that a large number of people have dropped out of the work force,” the presidential nominee said, according to his website. “Had those people not dropped out of the workforce, the unemployment rate would be above 10 percent. This is a presidency that has failed to put in place the kinds of policies that would help the American people.”

Romney went on to say, “Look, I’m very concerned about middle income families that are really struggling. I’m concerned about middle income families who’ve dropped into poverty. … Folks are having a hard time out there and this president promised something different than that and his policies failed us.”

After the short press conference where Cain and McKinney spoke, some volunteers staffed phone banks set up in a conference room at the downtown Bangor headquarters.

To learn more or to volunteer for Women for Obama stop by the Obama for America headquarters or contact Margaret Payne, field organizer, at mpayne@ofammaine.com or 404-6159.

Helen Regan, Maine Women for Obama co-chairwoman, and Jean Hoffman, founder and CEO of Putney Inc., spoke at the Portland launch, the press release said.

Educating voters about the candidates is key to making an informed decision when heading to the polls in November, said McKinney.

“Since I arrived here I have met people who have never left the state. And that’s OK. But it’s not OK to have blinders on to what’s going on,” she said.

  1. So they are supporting a Prez. whose own White House pays women less than men doing the same work?

    1. Because your lying. There is no direct job for job comparison. The average female pay in the White House is less than the average male pay in the White House, but this does not take into consideration what job they are doing. Although, it makes me sad that men tend to fill the higher paying positions, it is less pronounced in Obama’s white house than the nation on average.

New Book Claims Obama White House Is a ‘Hostile Workplace’ for Women

A new book claims the Obama White House is a “hostile workplace” for women and a “boys’ club,”“Confidence Men: Wall Street, Washington, and the Education of a
President” by Pulitzer Prize winner Ron Suskind discusses pervasive
infighting within the administration, and quotes former White House
communications director Anita Dunn as saying, “this place would be in
        court for a hostile workplace.”

  2. Sounds as though Lisa McKinney came to town to educate the hicks!  Is she a community organizer for the Organizer-in-chief?  What is her small business?  Obama has done nothing positive for women, and he certainly does not represent the unborn babies that women carry, unless they want to get rid of the babies by killing them before they can see the light of day, and all with Obama’s blessing–he is the most pro-abortion president we have had(fact on record, since he is adamantly for partial-birth abortion, also), and now he is the one who says that homosexuals and lesbians should be able to get married.
Just remember this Mother’s Day that over 57 million unborn and partially born babies have been killed since the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision of 1973. Is that a testament to motherhood and to women?

      1. Then they should not of gotten pregnant, how many abortions are from convenience? Do you know what a partial birth abortion is and does? The women already decided what do do with her body when she got prenant. How about the baby, and do get me the excuse that it isn’t a baby. That is just Liberal Democratic propaganda.

          1. Happens more than you think. How about premature babies I suppose they are life. Look upand see how many abortions are for convenience? So saying accidental births to promote abortions is pretty much a farce.

      2. Then it is not our responsibility to take care of these women.  We shouldn’t have to subsidize them so they can kill an innocent unborn child.  These women who have abortions should be tried for killing their unborn child. Any Liberal Government official who allows this behavior they should be tried as well.

      3. Fine. I won’t tell you or any other woman what they should do. But, I will express my heart-felt belief that abortion is murder. I also believe that one mentally competent adult slaying another is also murder. One more thing I strongly believe in is to hold drunk drivers who kill others responsible for murder. Every single law we have is based on a belief that at least one person holds, most likely from a moral standpoint. Again, most laws are agreed on by the majority. Roe v. Wade is no exception, except for the last bit.

          1. Happens to us all, every day. Any law which offers possible consequences for a physical action such as assault, theft, murder, and the like is dictating what one can and should do with their body, correct? And, just because you (or I) say so, does not make it so. In this country, the rule of law is (hopefully) decided by the majority. Not one of us can ever see the big picture, and so cannot with absolute certainty say what is wrong or what is right, including what the rights to our very own body are. You can argue the point that you hold the key to your own existence until the cows come home, but you will never be able to prove it. Abortion is about control over something no person really has any control over whatsoever. It is time for many of us on both sides of the debate to leave childish things behind and move beyond indignant righteousness.

    1. You might want you change your username, as you are clearly not in support of freedom for all.

    2. You are obviously not a conservative.  Not even close. The very foundation of the conservative philosophy is keeping large intrusive government out of our private lives.  Yet you want big intrusive government telling women what they should do with regard to their reproductive health, and you want big intrusive government telling consenting adults whom they can or can not commit to legally.  No, you are not even close to being conservative.  You have just stated that you are a champion of big intrusive government in the most private aspects of our personal lives.  And because of that, you are certainly not for freedom.  And as to being for “life,” well, I would like to know right now how much time you spend lobbying the government and the rich to help these poor kids receive what they need to live and succeed AFTER they are out of the womb.  Hm?  Tell me.  Or do you just do what most fake phony hypocritical Republicans do and once they are born: call them “riffraff”, lobby to take everything possible from them and give it to the rich, and treat them like pieces of unwanted dirt?  Hm?  Tell me now.  Go ahead.  I dare you. Tell us all exactly how much time you spend actively advocating for the children of the poor and working on their behalf to help them succeed in life AFTER they are born? PS:  “most pro-abortion president” = delusional nonsense.  Kindly find your local planet.

      1. Perhaps the fact that he repeatedly voted to allow let children die who were born instead of killed during an abortion procedure has a little to do with the One being the most pro-abortion president.   Ignorance, willful or otherwise, does not bolster your credibility.

      2. Wow yow have it all figured out. I for one have no burning desire to have my tax dollars  used by the government to fund abortions, especialy repeated abortions which are common place today.  How is it that these women continue to get pregnant with all of the birth control options available?  The best way to prevent abortion is to not get pregnent!  well maybe when the taxpayers are responsible for payment of a women having multiple abortions maybe the doctor should do the world a favor  provide them with a free complementary  historectmy as well. good night

  3. Ladies, you surely know about Bill Maher (Obama’s  big $1,000,000 supporter) whose nastiness towards women is well documented. He has used the most despicable words to describe women.

    1. Bill Maher slings vulgarity against men and women alike. And more importantly, he’s opposed to the Republican effort to return females to second-class citizen status.

  4. History has proven socialism to be a failed economic model
that oppresses and enslaves its people. Supporting the socialist in the WH is idiotic.

    1. Then you must despise Republicans who are not the biggest socialists.  The socialist Republicans wholely support the most socialist program we have which accounts for half the federal budget which is the US military combined with the socialist military industrial complex giveaways, especially the socialist no-bid contract giveaways which they adore the most.  The socialist Republicans also adore their socialist taxpayer subsidy giveaways to oil corporations, sugar corporations, and many others.  Republicans are entirely socialists as well as they adore their Social Security, Medicare, and oodles of government programs and services at all levels that they constantly use.  The socialist Republicans also love their church-sponsored organizations and church schools to be socialized with taxpayer subsidies and vouchers.  So congratulations.  If you are a Republican, you are most definitely a SOCIALIST.

      1. Um, providing for the common defense is most definitely not a socialist enterprise.  That’s a legitimate function of government according to the Constitution, and that fact should be learned in elementary social studies classes.  Apparently, it’s not learned in most government schools.

      2.  Failed attempt at  being witty , your examples wouldn’t pass muster in a 3rd grade Civics  class.

  5. I know allot of educated women who support Gov. Romney. Can’t blame Bush for all the people who have left the work force because there isn’t any Jobs. People need Jobs.

    1. RoMONEY the empty PHONY will get POUNDED to pieces in this election, and the silly joke of a Republican Party here in Maine is going get thrashed the likes of which it hasn’t seen in decades.  The Maine Republicans should be wearing clown suits and throwing pies at each other.

  6. Hey Joe,  send someone up ta Maine and gather deir women folk. I hear they don’t have anyone to educate dems.. Emily Cain called and asked forome eductrcaters for da Maine women. I guessing day think maina women can’t tink on dare own.

    1. Well, that’s not too far off from the truth. Maine has turned into one of the most ignorant, uneducated places around. Just the type of sheeple republicans like lepage feed on.

  7. President Obama has launched a war on women. Despite the claim that the Republicans did that…..consider that President Obama has put us on a path of economic disparity from his massive deficits. Every child born today and in the years to come will be paying off his mess. Every lady I know cares deeply about her children; to think of the debt that they will have to pay off – is incomprehensible. Shameful.

    1. Check your facts, when Bush took office the national debt was ZERO and when he left it was in the trillions.  It took him eight years to dig the hole the country is in, so it’s Bush’s mess we will be paying off in the many years to come. Shame on Bush.

      1. The national debt has not been 0 ( ZERO ) for a very very long time before bush. If you truly believe the national debt was ZERO when he took office then you are so past any semblance of facts  your reality must be a truly grand place to dwell.

    2. This argument is so silly. Even if we gave you your fallacious “Obama is crushing our future” argument. How does that possibly compare with the very targeted attacks towards women like the repeal of the equal pay act or crafting legislation that allows for refusal of birth control?

  8. I feel sorry for each of you! Your only hurting yourself and the rest of us. Your much better not being involved if you support Obama. Do your research first and without question you should realize it’s best to register Republican and support Ron Paul!!

  9. Gee that must be whole gang in the picture. What has O done that would warrant another term?

    1. After the utter disaster of the corrupt corporate toadie war criminals Co-Presidents Rove and Cheney and their Puppet Bushie, this president has returned intelligence and class to the White House, prevented the Bush Great Recession from becoming a Great Depression, has 25 straight months of private sector job growth with over 4 million jobs, and saved the American auto industry and its 1 million jobs which your corporate toadie phony fool ultra flip flopper buddy RoMONEY wanted to let die.  The TeaRadical CrazyTrain ReFOOLicans will be CRUSHED here in Maine in November, and they can say bye bye to the US House as well.

      1.  Your writing style looks like  the   transcript of a 3rd graders tea party with an imaginary friend. Do you have to work at that?

      2. Yea that teleprompter is a real smart guy. Corruption? Does Tim Geithner ring a bell. Created jobs yea right. If he has created so many Then Why are we still losing 400k per month? You really need to put down the Koolaid

    1.  How’s that working out, that Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act? How’s it working out in the White House, for the Woman who work there?

  10. I think I will make my million by manufacturing “Big O” darts boards and put a few people back to work!  Oh and by the way I will not apologize to the Chinese for buying american made darts!

  11. ““Not one woman was a Democrat. and not one could engage in a conversation about who they supported” for president, McKinney said on Wednesday, just before a Women for Obama initiative was launched in Bangor. ”
    **********************************************
Women of northern Maine…..it’s clear to see what these Portlanders think of all Maine women who aren’t Kool-Aid Democrat/Progressive Obamaettes.

Anyone else feeling the hair rising on your back before the spitting and hissing cat-fight erupts?

    1. In general, it’s not fair to fight with elitist snobs who have nothing but an opinion and a wish to impose their will on others. After all, it wouldn’t be an equal battle.
      :)

  12. The WAR ON WOMEN continues. What?
No outrage about the Time magazine cover?
Oh, that is just a wonderful thing to dsplay.
A kid who looks old enough to be running around
a schoolyard hanging on to mommy’s  boob.
I suppose all the libber women think that is a great
    thing to be displaying.

  13. Which one of these wonderful Obama women
posed for the cover of Time magazine? I am sure
they must have loved that wonderful display of a
    woman. Very tasteful.

  14. I am a Maine woman and I am insulted that because I am a woman and the presumption is that I should vote to re elect President Obama.  It is so easy to say – he is for women; he is for the middle class.  I do not see how either women, middle class or families have benefited under President Obama.  I see the national debt has drastically increased.  I see that my children and I will have the burden to pay that off.   All people – just not women need to think beyond the campaign promises and look at the facts and figures.  What exactly has Obama actually done?

He reminds me of a parent who is spoiling his child because he wants to be liked and be their friends.  Yes, I’ll give you this entitlement.  Yes, I’ll give you that entitlement, Yes, Yes, Yes – if it sounds good and makes you happy – it is yours.   Someone has to pay for all these entitlements – it is you, and I, our husbands, our children, our grand children.   Let’s look for someone who can say “No”.  Let’s look for someone who can help lead the way with some self discipline.

  15. To: Women of Bangor

From: Lisa McKinney a mother who is concerned about the future of our children. Before we moved to Maine, my son had 37 kids in his 3rd grade class, no science, art, music, or P.E. and if we stayed more cuts were expected. I just hope to preserve what we all have here in Maine. Maybe if you read what I spoke yesterday you’ll have better understanding of my position and that my only hope is to bring women who share the same values together.

Parents, can you remember the day when your first child was born?

I remember when my son was born; imagining the wonderful world he would grow up in; believing the world was his oyster. The things that we had as children I took for granted; a solid education, supportive community services, a safe and healthy environment, and accessible healthcare. But now there is a struggle to maintain that world and every day it is being eroded. President Obama’s presidency, if nothing else, has been about stopping that erosion. By supporting teachers, nurses, firefighters, police; clean energy policies; and the creation of the affordable care act.

That is why it is absolutely essential for the women of Maine to come together NOW to help re-elect President Obama.

    President Obama RESPECTS women

    He SUPPORTS women

    He INVESTS in women

President Obama understands that women are the backbone of our youth, who are our future. President Obama understands this because his mother supported him and taught him that hard work, respect for others, and exerting yourself are characteristics of a good person. I want my children to respect me for standing up for their future success by making sure they have the infrastructure to build their own American dream.

I ask you,Is it too much to ask for women to come together

and support President Obama who has brought equal pay to women in the workforce?

Is it too much to ask for women to come together

and support President Obama who has brought affordable healthcare to our children and for the women who take care of them?

Is it too much to ask for women to come together and support President Obama who has passed emergency funding to support more than 260,000 jobs in public schools and is expanding access to quality, affordable higher education—not taking it away.

Is it too much to ask for women to come together and support President Obama who is laying the foundation for an economy built to last which will ensure the prosperity of our children’s futures, and ours?

I could go on and on because I am proud of America for electing this president and standing up to adversity so we would have the ability to rebuild this great nation and provide the type of communities that we want our children to be raised in and the opportunities we were given.

The continuation of this recovery is especially vital to women.

So it is not too much to ask in fact it is critical to support President Obama to ensure that these values are not diminished.

I ask the women of Maine to please come together and re-elect President Obama and support his many policies that will continue to move women and America forward!

    1. Your comments make no sense.

First, what does a second term for Obama have to do with the lack of educational amenities in your former location?  If Obama’s first term hasn’t led to the re-implementation of science, art, music and PE in your former school district,  it’s because it’s a state/local funding problem, not a national funding problem. Every state is different.

Maine already has a high educational tax burden, with an average of 75% of property taxes going to the local school districts. We are already spending too much on education — we’re just not spending it as wisely as we should be.

We do not need to spend more on education in Maine. We need to spend better.

Reforms are needed, and that’s why Governor LePage has appointed a new DOE Commissioner, Steve Bowen, who has been diligently working on reviewing and streamlining Maine’s education systems. The needed reforms are a local and state problem – not national.

I do not support a second term for Obama because his economic, social, military and foreign policies are a bad deal for America. We need to stop the big spending and big government aims in DC, and keep him from expanding our national deficits any further.

In one term, he has increased the national deficit more than the last 8 presidents combined.

Finally, it’s insulting to treat women as a special or separate class of people, by playing the Mommy card in touting for votes. Voters are people, and the political process should be gender-blind. Real equality is achieved when we put aside gender in such discussions.

  16. More Greek pillars!

The day my kids were born they had never lied and had never been lied to.

  17. “I thought where are these women getting their education”  nice talk..
So Emily Cain and company think Maine women are stupid..
Emily Cain and company are going to educate you.
You are going to sit there until you get it right.
Sounds like a British finishing school for women who are taught to be proper and do as they are told.
Thank you Emily Cain Democrtic minority leader of Orono for putting women in there place.
    Where are the classes again?

  18. Obama has done one thing great for this country. He alone has  increased firearm sales exponentially even the lefties are buying as they like everyone else are afraid they will not be able to soon. The uptake has already started earlier then last election did. Many buyers are females so he has done good for women.

  19. “Since I arrived here I have met people who have never left the state.
And that’s OK. But it’s not OK to have blinders on to what’s going on,”
    she said.

If she really thought that staying in Maine was “OK,” she would never have brought it up. It’s clear McKinney thinks Maine women are uninformed hicks, and that we need “indoctrination” if we’re not Democrats.

There is no correlation between intelligence and traveling outside the state of Maine. Nor does it follow that Maine women are “ininformed” because they’re not Democrats. McKinney’s comments are insulting.

  20. I got dismayed with the president after he basically fired the first American Indian US Prosecutor who happened to be a woman (Diane Humetewa (Hopi), Attorney General of the state of Arizona) , because politics is more important then humanity.

  21. BDN …why did you censor my post?
No vulgarity, no offensive words, and yet the truth is enough for you to censor my post?
