SPRUCE HEAD – Wentworth Eugene Durkee, 98, died May 9, 2012, at a Rockport hospital. He was born March 20, 1914, in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, son of George A. and Jennie (Jenkins) Durkee II.
After attending school for agriculture, he farmed for several years, then did some lobster fishing and then worked as an estate caretaker until his retirement. He enjoyed hard work, cutting wood right up until his 90th birthday. He loved hunting, especially duck hunting, and salt water fishing and boating.
He was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Edna (Gray) Durkee; and three brothers. Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Manford and Patricia Durkee of Spruce Head; four brothers, Robert and wife, Eleanor Durkee, of Portland, Gerald and Marian Durkee of Rhode Island, Douglas Durkee of Hope, George and Adrian Durkee of Islesboro; grandchildren, Randy, Manford Jr., Leonard, Kevin, Cheryl, Lawrence, Lorry and Edith; 17 great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and special friends, Fred and Betty Mosley.
