BIDDEFORD, Maine — A man who was out on bail for domestic violence charges is back behind bars, according to police.

John A. Elwell Sr., 49, of Biddeford is facing charges of aggravated trafficking of marijuana, violation of his bail and cocaine possession, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said in a statement.

The Maine Drug Enforcement Agency was tipped off that Elwell was selling drugs in his apartment at the Thatcher Motel in Biddeford, McCausland said. After Elwell was arrested Tuesday, agents found $600 cash, a quarter pound of marijuana and a small amount of cocaine.

Since Elwell’s apartment is located within 1,000 feet of the St. James School, his marijuana charge was elevated to aggravated, McCausland said.

Elwell was taken to the York County Jail and was scheduled to appear in court later Wednesday.
