PROSPECT, Maine — Police say that a Prospect man knew better than to go to his estranged wife’s house last weekend without a police escort and he remains in jail on charges triggered by his decision.
Scott Leathers, 36, had called police fairly late Saturday evening to request that an officer come with him while he went to his estranged wife’s house to pick up some of his belongings, according to Lt. Jason Trundy of the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office.
But because of the late hour, Leathers was told to call back and reschedule at a more reasonable time. While on the phone with police, Leathers agreed that this was an OK idea, Trundy said Wednesday. But after he hung up, Leathers reportedly reconsidered the plan and decided to go to her house anyway.
He let himself in the front door and when the woman’s grown son challenged his right to be there, Leathers allegedly assaulted him. Then Leathers kicked in a locked bedroom door to gain access to his things, Trundy said.
When the woman tried to use a phone to call police to inform them of what was happening, Leathers reportedly took the phone away from her.
He left the house but police eventually found him at a place where he had been staying.
Police arrested Leathers and charged him with obstructing the report of a crime, assault and domestic violence criminal mischief.
“He clearly knew he should have had somebody with him and done it in a reasonable manner,” Trundy said. “He chose not to — and landed himself a list of charges for it.”
Leathers was taken to Waldo County Jail and from there was transferred to Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset, where he remained Wednesday. His bail is set at $700 cash, according to a jail official.

Ladies, it’s not that difficult to vet your boyfriends or husbands. Why, one would only have to log on to the Maine Sex Offender Registry, for instance…

and he is on there with 2 convictions…. WOW!
They need to have a registry for those found guilty of domestic violence- between that site & the one for sex offenders, women would have less of an excuse to NOT “vet” bofriends or husbands….it would be interesting to see how big a part of the population would appear on those 2 sites.

Just an observation here…… He tried to do things the right way. The police couldn’t or wouldn’t be bothered to deal with it at the time. I had my scanner on that evening and they didnt seem very busy at all. No way I condone what he did and how he did it, but I do have to wonder if the cops had just done their job when needed if it would have happened this way. They obviously had someone who wasn’t busy and could come arrest him. Just sayin…………..
