SKOWHEGAN, Maine — A local man who suffered a medical emergency while driving crashed into a house on Sunday, said Skowhegan police Deputy Chief Dale Lancaster.
Brian Cooley, 51, crashed his 1998 Jeep Cherokee into the north side of the 20 Greenwood Ave. home owned by Harold Marsh. Police received a call reporting the crash at 3:36 p.m.
“He had apparently some type of health issue [while the crash was occurring],” Lancaster said Monday. “The EMS personnel brought him back to life a couple of times. We’re investigating it as a medical event.”
Lancaster said Cooley was traveling southbound on Greenwood Avenue when he went through a stop sign at the Locust Street intersection, drifted onto the lawn of another home and hit the chimney of 20 Greenwood Ave.
“The vehicle was totaled. It appears to us that there’s major structural damage to the home. It did some foundation damage,” said Lancaster.
Neither speed nor alcohol was a factor in the crash, said Lancaster.
Cooley was taken to Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan and then to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, where he was listed in critical condition Monday afternoon. No charges were filed, said Lancaster.
Hopefully his condition improves drastically.

This is very sad, hopefully he’ll make a full and speedy recovery. There are over 40 million people in the United States without insurance. I hope Mr. Cooley is not one of them. All of these folks can go to the emergency room when something terrible happens. Many would never land there if they had preventive care that might detect some of these medical emergencies before they occurr right out of the blue.
Ya, preventative care, when most folks can barely put food on the table. Not to worry, LePage will help us.
A medical emergency such as a diabetic episode (low blood sugar) can occur suddenly and without much warning. Not much an emergency room can do about that in the way of preventative care.
So tragic and sad, I hope he’s going to be ok.
As family of Brian we would like to Thank Everyone for their continued thoughts and prayers. Brian will continue to need them as he is still in very critical condition. We are very greatful that no one else was injured in this accident. We would like to thank the EMS personnel for their quick response and their many efforts to get Brian back. Please keep him in your thoughts for the days to come are going to be long and hard as he recoverys.
