BATH, Maine — Maine State Police detectives are investigating the death this morning of a 6-week-old female in a home in Bath’s South End.
Bath Police Chief Mike Field said this morning that nothing about the death appears suspicious, but that procedure requires Maine State Police to investigate the death of any child younger than 6 years old.
Bath rescue workers responded at 4:50 a.m. today to the home after the child’s father reported that she was unresponsive.
“Bath rescue attempted lifesaving measures,” Field said, and the child was transported to Mid Coast Hospital. “But we learned at 5:50 a.m. that she had passed away.”
Brunswick police went to the hospital to secure the scene, Brunswick Deputy Chief Marc Hagan said.
Bath police remained at the residence while Maine State Police detectives remained at the hospital before moving to the family’s home, according to Field.

If there is nothing suspicious reported, PLEASE use a different headline for these stories. As you said, they *have* to investigate every unexplained infant death case, but that doesn’t mean you need to lead with the “investigation” part. Unless or until some reason for suspicion arises, there is no sense in making life much harder for parents who just lost their infant child.
I truly hope you’ll consider this in the future.
Obviously BDN cannot follow their own “Guidelines for posting”, which ought to apply to publishing “news” stories as well. If someone working on the paper lost their infant, do you think they would publish this? I think not…. Publishing this now, when there is no suspicion of foul play, is not only disrespectful, but cruel. IF and when there is evidence to the contrary, then it should be reported.

if this case is not suspicious then why bother reporting it in the paper? im sure if you reported every SIDS case, thats all that would be in the paper. i know i wouldnt want it advertised if i were in these poor parents shoes. my best friend lost her daughter to SIDS and her case wasnt reported in the paper. i could understand reporting it if there was something suspicious about the case but this one just seems like another unfortunate SIDS case. my heart goes out to the parents and all other family and friends to this little one.
While I agree with what you’re saying, more often than not when a case like this is in the paper unfortunately it is because something is amiss. Think about the most recent case in Arundel, it was reported on right away, also the little boy that was killed by the mom’s boyfriend in Capehart a few years back, also reported on before they were even sure how he died and the two babies that died in Bangor on Allen Street (though they still do not know what caused their deaths, it has to be something unnatural as it was a very odd coincidence that 2 babies died within months of each other at the same address and from 2 different families). I am hoping if this is not the case, say if the baby passed away from SIDS or something that was not at the fault of another then I wish the parents to find peace and you’re right it should not be in the paper…but just pay attention, I am thinking there is going to be more to this story and there are going to be a lot of angry commenter’s. (I would love to be wrong though, of course.)

With the babies in Bangor it said that they investigate under age 3 now it says age 6?? Confusing
This is so sad, why are there so many young, and innocent children dying? My thoughts and prayers go out to the family.
