BRUNSWICK, Maine — A 26-year-old Harpswell man faces a charge of felony aggravated furnishing of heroin following a May 16 incident in which a Bath woman overdosed on the drug, according to police.
Jothan Johnson, 26, of 182 Doughty Point Road, Harpswell, was charged with aggravated furnishing of a scheduled drug and possession of a scheduled drug, Brunswick Police Detective Rich Cutliffe said Tuesday.
Brunswick police responded at approximately 8 p.m. May 16 to the Tontine Mall parking lot for a report of a possible overdose. Officers discovered a woman unconscious and not breathing in a vehicle.
Brunswick firefighters revived the woman in an ambulance while en route to Parkview Adventist Medical Center, where she was treated and released.
According to Cutliffe, Johnson and the woman met “for the purpose of using heroin,” which Johnson allegedly supplied.
“While Johnson was preparing to use heroin, the woman began using, which led her to get sick, pass out and turn blue,” Cutliffe said.
Police seized a syringe “fully loaded” with a liquid that allegedly tested positive for heroin, he said. They also seized $678 in cash, as well as drug paraphernalia, including a spoon and hypodermic needle covers.
Johnson was charged with aggravated furnishing of a scheduled drug because the alleged incident occurred within 1,000 feet of two drugfree safe zones, the Union Street School and the Brunswick Mall.
He posted $500 bail at the Brunswick police station. Information on a court date was not immediately available.

Please tell me this woman is being charged with something also. I understand that he furnished the drug, but she chose to use it. What happened to personal responsibility? I am glad to hear this woman is OK, and am hopeful that this was a huge wake up call to her & she gets the help she obviously needs. Unfortunately something in my gut is telling me otherwise.
The article says he was charged with aggravated furnishing because it occurred within 1,000 feet of a school and a mall. If the buyer hadn’t overdosed he still could’ve been charged. So just using that reasoning alone shouldn’t the buyer be charged too? Can’t sell if no one is buying, right?
AGREED Shouldn’t she be charged at least with Possession since she possessed the drug in her body…They both should be footing the bill for the EMS response as well.
Its her fault she OD’d. Shoulda charged her for possession by consumption and for being stupid, but they didnt, they released her from the hospital free and clear. Perhaps if society stopped catering to and providing for and breeding weak people, we wouldnt have these kinds of problems. Make them responsible for their actions. They’ll learn real quick. If you are going to dance with the devil, you better be wearing your best fire proof suit.
As an edit, what kind of dealer sticks around after someone OD’s on his gear? He wasnt too smart, either, apparently. Make the call, split. Dont basically try to get slammed for all kinds of things due to someone elses idiocy. Smart people, them.

Well now, shouldn’t the entire state of Maine be made a “drugfree safe zone”?
More laws = stricter penalties = higher fines and more revenue = less drug use. Simple chain of common sense.
