JONESPORT – Barbara K. Young, 89, passed away peacefully May 21, 2012, at her home. She was born Feb 14, 1923, in Jonesport, the daughter of the late Lewis B. and Frances (Harmon) Kirby.

She graduated from Jonesport High School, attended Washington State Normal School and became a teacher until her marriage. She was a lifelong member of Sawyer Memorial Congregational Church, Jonesport Literary Club and a member of Rumery Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star until 1977. She assisted her husband in his medical practice until the family moved to Bethel. She was a member of the Women’s Auxiliary to Maine Medical Association, serving as president for one year. She later returned to her home in Jonesport, where she worked as a librarian at Peabody Memorial Library. For many years Barbara was a dedicated worker at Jonesport Town Office. She will be remembered for her fantastic cooking skills, sense of humor, love of art, animals and her devotion to family.

She is survived by her daughter, Carol Colby of Rosedale, Md., and her children, Dan, Debbie, Katie; and son-in-law, Matt Webb; two sons, John of Colorado and Daryl of Jonesport and his children, stepdaughter, Kelsie Iberra and his son, John Michael and wife, Tania, and their son, Michael; her brother, Lewis F. Kirby and wife, Emma Ann, and their daughter, Janet Crowley and husband, Bruce, and their daughter, Maegan, and Lynne Kirby and son, Jacob; several close relatives, and her great friends, Joyce Bryant, Evelyn Armstrong King, Becky Kendall and Norma Marin. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, H. John Young M.D.; a nephew, Michael Kirby; lifelong friends, Frances Carver and Frances Kelly, many relatives and most recently her close friend, Sam Auerbach.

A graveside service will be held at a later date at Greenwood Cemetery, Jonesport.
