AUGUSTA – John M. McCullum, 83, of Purinton Avenue, died Friday, May 25, 2012, at his home. He was born July 16, 1928, in Augusta, son of Ottie and Louise (Mason) McCullum.

John graduated from Cony High School in 1946. He played baseball and football and was named state high school first team “Mr. Tackle.” He continued his education at Nichols Junior College in Massachusetts and later graduated from the University of New Hampshire, where he also was a tackle on the football team. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He had worked for New England Telephone and Telegraph until his retirement in 1984. John was also an incorporator for many years at Kennebec Savings Bank. He was a member of Penney Memorial United Baptist Church, Augusta; Masonic Blue Lodge No. 141, Augusta; Scottish Rite, Kora Shrine Temple, Lewiston; and was a charter member of Kora Karts Unit, Kora Shrine. He was also a life member of Order of Eastern Star, Queen Esther Chapter, Hallowell; and was a past member of Augusta Rotary Club and New England Telephone Pioneers.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Dr. James E. McCullum and Ottie T. McCullum Jr. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Ethlyne H. McCullum, whom he married, March 26, 1960, in Bangor; sister, Mary (McCullum) Woodman of Nashua, N.H.; seven nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a graveside service 1 p.m. Friday, June 1, at Mount Hope Cemetery, Winthrop Street, Augusta. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Kennebec Valley Humane Society, 10 Pet Haven Lane, Augusta, ME 04330; or Shriners Hospitals for Children, 51 Blossom St., Boston, MA 02114.
