GLENBURN, Maine — An Orrington man was arrested for stealing a friend’s car and avoiding an officer in a high-speed pursuit Saturday morning, police said.
Nicholas O. Goulet, 32, stole the car from a 32-year-old Glenburn woman with whom he claimed to be friends and had stayed with the night before, Penobscot County Deputy Steven Saucier said. The two had spent the night drinking with friends, the deputy added, and Goulet took the woman’s 2000 Honda Accord the next morning.
“She hadn’t even woken up,” Saucier said.
Maine State Police Trooper Chris Cookson said he soon caught Goulet driving erratically on Pushaw Road in Glenburn. Cookson proceeded to pull him over, but just before the car came to a stop, Goulet peeled away and sped up to 95 mph in a 45-mph zone.
Goulet lost control of the car, it rolled over and crashed into a rock wall in the woods on Pushaw Road just north of Cedar Breeze North, Cookson said.
“After he crashed, he attempted to run away,” Cookson said.
Cookson said he could see “blood, bumps and bruises” on Goulet, but the man refused treatment after being taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.
Goulet was arrested by Cookson on charges of operating with a suspended or revoked license, eluding an officer, speeding more than 30 mph over the limit, driving to endanger, aggravated criminal mischief, refusing to submit to arrest or detention, and unauthorized use of property.
Goulet’s past criminal charges include failing to stop an ATV while operating under the influence and violating a condition of his release.
Goulet was taken to the Penobscot County Jail on Saturday and will be released on $1,560 bail later this week, jail officials said.
He has previously violated ” condition of release” so , of course,
lets turn him lose once more.
What could possibly go wrong?
More than a few of us respect and value the bail system, but this seems to be a proper case for holding the person without bail.

The bail should have covered totally her car, towing of the car, & aggravation to waking up to police banging on her door while shes hungover……
by all means let out on bail –seeings how that works so well- maybe next time he will kill some innocent bystander.
What a shame that you can’t fix stupid. This guy definately needs fixing. He drove an ATV while intoxicated, then he violated conditions of bail by stealing his “friends” car and totals it. He will be released later this week on bail again. Maybe it isn’t he that is stupid, it’s the system. Never mind.
