PORTLAND, Maine — A local Rite Aid pharmacy was burglarized early Tuesday morning and police are searching for the person or people responsible.

Authorities were dispatched to the Rite Aid at 701 Forest Ave. just before midnight Monday after a burglar alarm at the store, according to Lt. Scott Pelletier.

When police and a Rite Aid representative got to the scene and investigated, nothing was amiss and the building seemed secure, Pelletier said.

Just after 6 a.m. Tuesday a Codman Street resident noticed Rite Aid prescription bags in his driveway and called police, according to Pelletier.

Officers returned to the store and discovered the establishment’s drive-through window had been smashed.

The bags found in the driveway contained bottles of prescription pills, some of which were empty and some full, the lieutenant said.

Police don’t yet have a description of the suspects as of Wednesday morning but are in the process of obtaining video surveillance from the scene.

“We have not received a [surveillance] video yet to see if we can make anything out,” said Pelletier.

Locked cabinets where drugs are kept at the store were not broken into, Pelletier said.

“The only drugs taken were prepackaged and ready for pickup,” he said. “We don’t think anything else was taken from the building.”

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact the Portland police detective division at 874-8533.

        1. Still stole stuff. That maks them thieves and for that they should be put in jail and made to pay for their crimes. they do not deserve to be let go.

They couldn’t have got much with that sort of an operation. At least the other robberies that have happened were more specific about what they wanted and got. These idiots probably ended up with blood pressure and thyroid medicine! Link to comment

  1. The state seriously needs to turn one of it’s jails into a year long intensive drug treatment program and start helping all these addicts get clean.  Just locking someone up and releasing them in a few months doesn’t give them the tools they need to get and STAY off drugs.

    1. There are plenty of programs available in Maine’s correctional facilities to help inmates battle drug dependence. In the end it boils down to personal responsibility, not expanded government and an increased nanny state.

I would like to see inmates chained together picking up trash along the roads while guards on  horseback watch over them with shotguns. That is what I call “occupational therapy”.

    2. Isn’t a large part of Dorothea Dix Hospital empty? Why couldn’t it be used for long intensive drug treatment?

  2. It’s getting to the point that Pharmacies will need to be guarded 24/7, along with security officers who will search every customer for weapons before being permitted to enter the building.

  3. rite-aid seems to have a real problem with security. keep reading about rite-aid robberies from one end of maine to the other.
