ORONO, Maine — An Old Town woman is facing a theft charge after police say she took a supply of deodorant from a local supermarket.

Eva Pangakis, 36, took the deodorant out of its box at Bell’s IGA on May 30, put it in her purse and slipped out of the store, Orono police Capt. Josh Ewing said.

Even though Pangakis escaped, she was caught on video surveillance, Ewing said, and when she returned to the store on Wednesday, store personnel recognized her and called police.

Pangakis was interviewed and issued a summons for theft but was not arrested, Ewing said. She is due in court Aug. 9.

  1. Times are tough when someone is so broke they resort to stealing deodorant because they can’t even afford to buy any.

  2. “To think, I used to steal Halloween candy from other kids. Now I am the governor!”

“Quite frankly, the science that I’m looking at says there is no [problem]. There hasn’t been any science that identifies that there is a problem. The only thing that I’ve heard is if you take a plastic bottle and put it in the microwave and you heat it up, it gives off a chemical similar to estrogen. So the worst case is some women may have little beards. And we don’t want that.” -Governor LePage

  3. C’mon BDN. If your mission is to keep the community informed of things that matter, does devoting over 100 words to a single stolen tube of deodorant make any sense?

  4. This is not a news story; at most it is a brief police log entry and only upon conviction. I seriously doubt the BDN is going to follow up on the actual outcome of the summons (there was not even an arrest in the case). What’s next, parking tickets on page 1? This is not responsible newspapering.

    1.  Yes, he will, whether you’re a supporter or not.  The Repubs are splitting into factions, about to become a series of small, alternate parties, with no chance of winning.

  5. Give me a break.  This woman is likely embarassed enough that she got caught stealing, not to mention that she was short on money to buys some deoderant, BDN really needed to plaster her name all over the news?
Pretty sad that we never did get the name posted about who pushed Ralph Greenleaf to the ground and killed him but you folks certainly dont waste any time getting the deoderant bandit…I am sad to say that i even read this rag if that is what you folks call journalism.

    1. You’re demonizing the BDN for reporting on a shoplifter?  If you owned the retail store and saw a significant part of your profits walking out the door how would you feel then?

      1. If a significant part of my profits are a couple of sticks of deoderant, than I would be in trouble already wouldnt I?  I never said they shouldnt prosecute her, i said that the BDN did not need to call her out in the pages of the newspaper when they clearly refuse to report on much bigger stories because of the name associated with the story..ie.  Greenleaf

  6. Hey Ryan, what story are you working on next…Grape bandits that eat grapes at the local Shop N Save before buying them?..

  7. I didn’t vote for him BUT…you’re blaming Obama for this lady stealing deodorant? Really?

  8. “Took a supply”…was a forklift needed or was there one stashed in her pocketbook?

  9. Roughly 36 years ago there was a mom giving birth that NEVER in a million years would have thought that sweet little baby would be featured on the news with the line “Old Town Woman Accused of Deodorant Theft”…. the pride that must be blooming in that family right now.

  10. All this indignation over her “not able to afford it” is BS. Some people just like to grab stuff
(kleptomania and thievery are different things but often lumped together).

    1. And my two children who stayed in Maine have switched jobs for higher paying jobs within the last year & 1/2. They had very good paying  jobs to begin with. Your point?

    2. SWend is right, times are WORSE in maine

as soon as my 2 kids [now adults in their 20s] graduated from high school , my wife and myself  got them to move out of state for a college education, and are now working full time careers in well paying jobs.  they have nice polite ,educated, NO TATTOO boyfriends

soon my wife and myself will be moving too. as soon as we can find some sucker to dump our house on

  11. She’s 36 years old.. I will bet that deodorant isn’t the only thing she steals.  She’s guilty, then charge her.  IT IS NOT OKAY TO TAKE WHAT DOES NOT BELONG TO YOU…

  12. I agree with Bill Buck and JeffCol! Everyone, let’s move on from very lame sensationalism and blaming anything on politicians! How are we to add any motive to this woman’s act and how does this deserve as much attention as the worst and the greatest that occurs everyday of our lives? It doesn’t relate at all. I hope for the people at BDN and those posting comments with political agendas that YOU WAKE UP! Eddie Vedder’s “Society” is playing loudly!

  13. Welfare fraud. Bangor stabbing. Man gets 7 years for killing. Woman accused of assulting police officer. Oh, don’t forget, woman accused of deodorant theft. BDN, get a life!
