BATH, Maine — A 28-year-old Bath man was arrested Monday afternoon at his home on Seafarer Lane after his wife reported that he assaulted her and then went outside to load bullets into the magazine of a rifle.

Robert Vaughn, 28, was charged with domestic violence assault and obstructing report of a crime, Bath police Lt. Stan Cielinski said Tuesday.

Just after 1:30 p.m., officers went to the home, where they found Vaughn outside the home, a rifle in a vehicle and a magazine for the rifle in the glove box, Cielinski said.

Vaughn’s wife told police the two argued about money and then Vaughn struck her before heading outside and loading the gun.

When police arrived, Vaughn was not holding any weapon, Cielinski said. Family members arrived to take possession of the firearm.

Vaughn was arrested and then released from the Bath police station on $250 unsecured bail. His bail conditions include no possession of firearms, according to Cielinski.

Vaughn is scheduled to appear in West Bath District Court on July 3.

  1.  Why wouldn’t they charge him with terrorizing? And if I had any say in it (If I was the cop) I’d seize the weapon. He clearly shouldn’t own a weapon if he’s threating to use it on somebody.

  2. OK? An 18 year old girl slaps her ex boyfriend and is released on 750 bail, and this guy struck and threatened his wife with a deadly weapon and gets 250 bail??? WTF??????

  3. REALLY?? $250.00 bail for assault and threatening his wife with a gun?? and then the brilliant police GIVE the gun to a FAMILY MEMBER…….I can not for the life of me figure out why this ‘system’ keeps doing the same ludicrous things over and over again (like $3.00 dollar bail and giving the weapons to unsecured family members) and then the police, the attornies and judges all appear actually surprised that bad things happen like with Monica, Coty and Amy Lake.  REALLY??  The only people who AREN’T surprised are the victims and the rest of us who can see this ‘system’ is broken and only favors the perpetrators.  Somebody within the system needs to catch a clue  and fix this cluster- because we all know what the definition of insanity is don’t we?!!

  4. This jerk will probably seriously maim or kill someone before something is done to stop him. Sad, but true. If convicted of the threatening with a firearm, he is suppose to be barred for life from owning firearms. I somehow doubt that will stop him.

  5. His bail conditions should have included no contact with the victim! The judicial system in Maine is severely flawed!
