BALDWIN, Maine — Police say a Baldwin man has died in a motorcycle crash.

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement that 28-year-old Daniel Fifield Jr. was headed west on Pigeon Brook Road at about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday when his off-road-style bike crossed into the oncoming lane, left the road, went into a culvert and crashed through a fence.

Fifield was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland where he was pronounced dead.

Police did not indicate whether any other vehicles were involved.

The cause remains under investigation.

    1.  Good question. I ride every day and I reluctantly wear leather and a helmet. I absolutely hate the gear but I like my life so I do it.

    2.  Chances are he was. The media always mention when someone wasn’t wearing a helmet. It is almost unheard of in the media when someone who died when wearing a helmet. Same way with seatbelts.

      1.  I think that given the way people jump all over the seat belt/helmet question on these message boards, they are doing better about addressing that in BOTH cases. My friend was killed in Orland on Saturday, and the article specifically says that she ‘died of massive trauma, despite wearing a seat belt’.

Specifically saying whether a person is or isn’t wearing a seat belt (or in this case a helmet) HELPS with the needless finger pointing and bickering about that detail, when the bigger issue at hand is that someone has lost their life.

To tofuman: I am by no means saying your question is stupid. I was referring to the people who fight back and forth, creating a 100 comment thread about seat belts, as well as those who like to assume things (like the people who ALWAYS accuse texting of being the cause of EVERY accident reported, before the police are even done cleaning up the scene)

        1. Many jump the gun comments here. The story says that there is no info of another car yet or if the road was closed for accident reconstuction.   We need to hold the horses untill they give us more.

  1. There has been way to many motorcycle fatalities this year, may this young man rest in peace. My condolences to the family.

    1.  I agree, but I would also like to add to that. There have been way too many motor vehicle fatalities this year! There have been like 12 (I may be off on my number) in the past month alone!

  2. When you leave the road, hit a culvert and go thru a fence there is no safety equipment in the world that is going to help.

  3. Ya true 1964 I remember the commercialsby state police saying I never unbuckled a dead body until one of their own died with his on in Belgrade area while according to the report ahem calibrating his radar never heard that ad again

    1. Was there a now missing comment from a ‘1964’?
If you meant remembering a 1964 ad (your, ahem, punctuation makes it hard to tell), there were only lap belts back then.
Since you mention radar, I’m going to assume the former.   :)

Edit: Either I’m a little blinder by the minute, or that “missing comment’ reappeared! Many of mine have recently disappeared only to show up some time later.
