DOVER-FOXCROFT, Maine — A Dover-Foxcroft man whose license was revoked because of his habitual offender status was arrested Monday afternoon after trying to outrun police — at first in a pickup truck and then, after he crashed it, on foot.

Jeremy Wheaton, 34, is facing charges of operating after revocation and violating the conditions of his bail from a prior arrest, Dover-Foxcroft police Officer Todd Lyford said early Monday evening.

Wheaton was being held at Piscataquis County Jail pending a court appearance, Lyford said. He said that the incident remains under investigation and that Wheaton may face additional charges after the district attorney’s office reviews the case.

According to Lyford, the trouble for Wheaton began about 4 p.m., when Lyford spotted Wheaton behind the wheel of his mother’s 2007 Chevrolet pickup — despite the fact that Wheaton had been arrested two weeks earlier on a charge of driving after revocation.

After Lyford saw him, Wheaton took off at what Lyford described as “a high rate of speed.” Lyford said he wasn’t able to clock the truck’s speed because he wasn’t able to get close enough.

Lyford followed the pickup from Dexter Road to Starbird Siding Road and onto Sangerville Line Road to the curved section where it turns into Shaw Road, where Wheaton lost control of the pickup and rolled it.

Lyford said he did not see Wheaton crash the truck.

“He was that far ahead,” he said.

Wheaton then ran away from the crash scene into a thickly wooded, swampy area, Lyford said. Lyford called for a tracking dog but canceled the request when Wheaton emerged from the woods on his own.

Wheaton, who was wearing a seat belt, suffered minor injuries in the rollover, the officer said. He was checked out by emergency rescue personnel, who determined he did not require a trip to the hospital, and then taken to jail.

The pickup, which appeared to have rolled completely over, came to a rest on its tires. It was demolished, Lyford said.

  1. The mother should have reported the thing stolen.  Doubtful any insurance agency is gonna pick up the tab for the truck when she allowed a habitual offender to drive it.

      1. Let me tell you all something!! Get a damn life!! Nothing better to do than run your mouth!!  I’d love to see the people that know our family so well that they hide on here and run their mouths!! Jeremy may be a lot of things, but remember this, he is still a person with a heart & soul, who has family and a mother… Shame on all you who sit there judging another persons life!! May God have mercy on your souls!!

        1. There is always one ‘friend’ signing on to make their one and only comment just to lash out in defense of a perp.
          Your turn.
I think you’re in the minority here.

        2. Sounds like you’re the one who needs to get a life. No one ever said they knew your family “so well” and quite frankly, it sounds like you’re the one that’s being pretty quick to judge. Sometimes the family needs to take a step back and realize the best thing they can do for a loved one is not to fight their battles and most importantly, stop drawing attention to them and the rest of the family by lashing out on a public forum.

  2. With a headline reading “…crashing mom’s truck” I was expecting the guy to be 19 or something like that, but 34 years old? Pffffft.

But good boy, you were wearing your seatbelt.
