PORTLAND, Maine — A Maine man has been sentenced to 16 years in prison in the death of another man during a fight two years ago.

A jury convicted Ernest Weidul last month of manslaughter and other charges in the May 2010 death of Roger Downs Jr.

Weidul plans to appeal the sentence and the conviction.

Prosecutors say the men had just met when they spent hours together drinking brandy. Authorities say Weidul punched Downs repeatedly in the head and neck after he became annoyed because Downs’ was flicking his finger at him and poking him.

Downs died a couple days later in the hospital.

The defense said Downs was the aggressor and Weidul reacted in self-defense.

  1. I completely agree with this sentence, but once again, i have to ask.  Why in the name of god, are other people who commit murder in Maine given much lighter sentences or get off completely?  Is it the courts?  The Lawyers, and the DA’s office or the Attorney Generals office because honestly, it seems as if they get these murder cases in court and once its been decided, they just pull a number out of a hat for the sentencing.
