HAMPDEN, Maine — Five young adults were charged with illegal possession of alcohol early Sunday morning after a Hampden police officer found them in an SUV parked behind the Circle K store on U.S. Route 1A.
Charged with illegal possession of alcohol by consumption were: Brian Duncan, 20, and Cody Noyes, 19, both of Brewer; Matthew Callahan, 18, of Frankfort; and James Potter, 18, of Orrington, according to a report filed by Hampden police Sgt. Scott Webber.
The driver, 19-year-old MacKenzie Coutts, who had not been drinking, was charged with possession of alcohol by a minor.
The SUV caught Webber’s attention because the store was closed at the time. He reported that there were two cases of beer inside. The minors are scheduled to appear at the Penobscot Judicial Center on July 12.

They should have given the driver a pass on the possesion charge for being a D/D and not drinking while driving.
and I agree here too!
remember there was 2 full cases of beer left ..the driver would have been drinking I can guarantee you this….I know these people
Okay big deal. They had a sober driver. You can vote, gambel, be tried as an adult, and fight and die for this country, but you can’t drink a beer. Makes no sense. Most other countries in this world have a drinking age of 18 and in some cases less yet they have nowhere near the problem with alcoholism that this one does. The reason being I believe is that they educate their kids about alcohol and it’s dangers yet they also teach them that it can be enjoyed responsibly and in moderation. How about going after the real criminals out there instead of young adults WITH a sober driver???
Yes it does make sense. It was tried before and thousands of young people died annually as a result. I wouldn’t mind nearly so much if it they just killed themselves but they put every other sober driver at risk also.
Right, it was tried before and the thousands that died were in a place calld Vietnam.
Some other countries allow you to drink while driving as long as you’re not over the legal limit. It’s called RESPONSIBILITY!
So you believe in prohibition? That was tried before too, and it didn’t work.
BTW “thousands of young people” died in Iraq, and Afghanistan in service of their Country, Is it your position that these service (MEn & WOMEN) do not have the judgement to responsibly consume alcohol?
Either make the age for voting, military service, signing of contracts 21, or drop the age of adulthood to 18. I am embarrassed that a second class citizen still exists. There is no reason at all why a man going off to war can not have a legal beer with his dad before he leaves.
Here we part ways, mostly because of my libertarian streak. If you’re an adult, you’re an adult…period.
In this country you are an adult at the age of 18… You can buy a house, car, go to jail for having sex with your 16 year old girlfriend (adult/minor thing) Kill women and children in foreign countries or die and if your drinking with you buddies you are underage. you figure it out .
In knowing these kids I would say the police may have saved someones life last evening/early morning, this is a weekend thing with these kids. HATS OFF TO THE POLICE!
What’s wrong 1234? You sore because they wouldn’t let you ride along?
