WINTHROP, Maine — A man is in custody after a Maine state trooper halted a bank robbery in progress and pursued the suspect from Manchester into Winthrop.

Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said Trooper Dane Wing stopped the robbery at the Savings Bank of Maine on Pond Road.

Wing saw a man with a mask and confronted him in the parking lot before he had a chance to go in the bank, McCausland said. The suspect reportedly jumped into his SUV and took off into Winthrop with Wing in pursuit.

The chase ceased in downtown Winthrop and the suspect reportedly was tackled by local residents and taken into custody after a brief foot pursuit.

The suspect’s name has not been released.

  1. I know the officer had to confront this guy but,  If he never went into the bank, what’s the charge ?

    1. Apparently the failure to wear the usual hoodie as most bank/store/pharmacy robbers do in this state…..

  2. He wasn’t tackled by local residents. He was tackled by a Baptist missionary from Tennessee.
