GREENBUSH, Maine — A woman and her son suffered severe burns early Friday when an aerosol can exploded after it was put on a campfire.
Larry Shirland, 42, and Carrie Twitchell, 28, both of Greenbush, and Twitchell’s 11-year-old son were enjoying a campfire at Shirland’s Greenfield Road home just after 2 a.m. Friday when Shirland went inside to get a cardboard box to keep the fire going, according to Sgt. Ken Grimes of the fire marshal’s office.
Shirland was unaware the box contained an aerosol can and when he put the box on the fire the can ruptured, Grimes said.
Shirland suffered minor burns and refused medical treatment at the scene, but Twitchell and her son suffered severe face burns, according to Grimes. They both were taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.
The incident still is under investigation, Grimes said, and it’s unknown if Shirland will face charges.
A hospital spokesman said Friday afternoon Twitchell has been transferred to an undisclosed location.

Best of luck to the both of them. Hoping for a speedy recovery. The kids at OTLC will miss you while you recover.
This is just another one of those horrible freak accidents we’ve been hearing so much about lately.
Unknown if there will be charges against Shirland? Is there even a trace of criminal intent? I think not.
Unfortunately there are going to be alot of people making this ACCIDENT out to be more, or pulling bits & pieces of the story they have heard or read and turning it into a negative thing. (unless your a friend or family member you Do Not know the entire story or details!) As a close friend I can only hope that this story brings the prayers & positive energy they both will need to heal from this. I am very greatful for the many people that have already shown their support in their recovery & I can only hope it will continue.
And 3 hours later nobody has done such a thing.
An 11 year old up at 2am? Kind of late, wouldn’t you say?
It’s summer vacation! Lighten up!
I have lightened up – 2am is a little late no matter what time of year. You need to grow up a little!
Darwin you can not escape him even at camp.. LOL
I’m so sorry to hear that. Accidents do happen. Hope you’re both okay! Love, hugs and prayers!
