The rainbow-colored Oreo graphic unveiled for LGBT Pride month proves at least one thing: Gays are just as susceptible to clever marketing as straights. At long last! Equality under commercialization.
The graphic was posted Monday evening on Oreo’s Facebook page and drew more than 52,000 shares and 177,000 likes in 24 hours — a robust social-media response that amounts to free advertising for Oreo, which is made by Nabisco, which is a subsidiary of Kraft Foods, which, with annual revenues of $54.4 billion, is the planet’s second-largest food company and doesn’t really need your pro-bono assistance with brand expansion.
Nevertheless, the graphic, like all advertising, plays on consumers’ emotions. A rainbow Oreo endears itself to the LGBT community and its straight allies. Inclusion of demographics breeds profusion of message.
“We are excited to illustrate what is making history today in a fun and playful way,” says Basil T. Maglaris, associate director of corporate affairs for Kraft, in an e-mail that toes the company’s sunny line. “Kraft Foods has a proud history of celebrating diversity and inclusiveness. We feel the OREO ad is a fun reflection of our values. There has been a lot of buzz about the image, and it shows how relevant OREO is to people even after 100 years.”
A cultural moment — galvanized politically by Barack Obama’s May endorsement of same-sex marriage — is being validated and exploited economically by big business over and over again. Earlier this month JCPenney, after enduring fringe criticism for enlisting Ellen DeGeneres as a spokeswoman in February, doubled down with a Father’s Day advertisment featuring two fathers and their children dressed in sensible shorts and bright-colored polo shirts. Last month Gap put two young gentlemen inside one snug gray T-shirt next to the words “Be One.” In March, Ben and Jerry’s released an ice cream pint called “Apple-y Ever After” whose container depicted a tuxedoed pair atop a rainbow-ribboned cake.
What’s next (besides eternal hellfire)?
Probably more gay advertising.
The risk-reward equation for corporate advocacy has changed over time, says Bob Witeck, president of Witeck Communications, Inc., which specializes in the gay and lesbian consumer markets.
What’s the worst thing that could happen to Kraft?
A denouncement from a special-interest group like One Million Moms, which recommended boycotting JC Penney for its “sinful nature” (the company, undeterred and still solvent as of press time, retained DeGeneres as a spokeswoman).
What’s the best thing?
An army of people sends your product around the Internet, and your century-old brand suddenly seems cutting-edge.
“Companies are looking at the reputation leaders of today, the Googles of the world,” Witeck says. “Google’s already changing their iconography constantly. They keep it relevant but update it to connect to different audiences. That intersection of fun and loyalty is important to get to.”
The post on Oreo’s Facebook page encouraged a high-volume debate rife with misspellings, indignation and hysterical punctuation.
One commenter: “this is absolutely disgusting!!! Vote with your dollar, I will NEVER buy anything Kraft Foods again.”
Another: “Don’t worry about them people boycotting you Oreo — I never bought a single cookie from you and now I will.”
Christians with no objection to same-sex marriage dunked the issue in Matthew 7 (“Judge not, that ye be not judged”). Christians opposing same-sex marriage cited Romans 1 (“Males committed indecent acts with males, and received within themselves the appropriate penalty for their perversion”).
And cookie fiends were more concerned with what the graphic means for their dessert options: “So like are we actually getting rainbow Oreos?”
The rainbow’s global status as a symbol of sexual equality comes in part from its embrace by corporations, says Gilbert Baker, the artist and vexillographer who created the rainbow flag in 1978.
“It’s basically the same message as always: that our sexuality in all its colors is a human right,” says Baker, who lives in New York. “That’s why it fits us and endures. . . . In the case of corporate appropriating — if they’re good to their employees and supportive of equal rights — that’s great because it sends the message farther out in the mainstream.”
And his thoughts on the rainbow Oreo in particular?
“I saw it,” Baker says. “Not sure I’d eat it.”
This Oreo, though, is not actually for sale and, according to a fine-print disclaimer, is “made with creme colors that do not exist.” So LGBT-friendly Oreo enthusiasts will have to make do with the standard black-and-white version, despite its tacit endorsement of biracial marriage.

Jude 1:7
If you think Hell is a joke, recall that Jesus warned 12 times against Hell.
“Where there is wailing and gnashing of teeth, and the worm dies not.”
Every religion on earth warns of hell, for the simple reason that hell is a real place.
Do not die without repenting of your sins, and turning to Christ.
My concept of Hell is being trapped in a place, for all eternity, with a bunch of vindictive, judgmental Christian’s lecturing me about morality.
I agree completely…..and sometimes I’m not convinced we’re not already in hell with all the hate and discontent the ‘christians’ like to spew.
You know what’s funny? All those who support the GLT and there freedom to express themselves the way they chose are also many of the same folks who support the “omama heath care bill” that removes the freedom to choose from EVERY American. Interesting ain’t it…
I have to say I find it hilarious that people like you don’t like being ‘told’ what to do by the government, yet you are the same people who like to tell gay Americans that they can’t get married. So how do you like it?
On another note …….Ummmm yeah First – it’s not GLT it’s LGBTQ. Secondly – The government mandates many things such as income tax, paying into social security and medicare etc., etc., and try to find a state government that does not require car insurance in this country. I can think of worse things than having health insurance……but hey you don’t want to buy the insurance then pay the penalty for not having the insurance……so there’s your ‘choice’ for being an American.
Let’s no forget that government taxes us for many things we don’t like-such as going around starting unneccessary wars, based on LIES, to massage a wannebe leader’s ego.
There is no law that says EVERY person in the country must buy car insurance. There are states that do not require you to have it even if you drive a car (Mississippi,
New Hampshire and Virginia . If you do not own a car you do not have to have it do you. That is the difference.
I fully support ANYBODY who wants to be joined be so. You want to marry a plant that is FINE with me. I do object to the use of the word marriage as that word already has a clear definition.
Your reply expounds my point. The left tend to be freedom for all EXCEPT what we do not like. Those of us TRUE conservatives believe in our founding documents. I do not care what color race or gender you are. All I care about is that we all agree to support or at least acknowledge everybody’s rights within the law.
Nice effort Maine gun guy- but EVERY state requires you to have car insurance coverage…what you fail to either realize or understand (or intentionally want to mislead) is this….in Mississippi you are required to have 25/50/25 for insurance or the car owner has the option to post bonds or cash, but you must be able to pay in you are in an accident. In NH you are required 25/50/25 and if you wish you may have your personal assets (house, stocks, bonds, etc) to pay for any car accidents but you have to pay for any accident you are in. Half my family live in NH all of them will tell you they ALL have car insurance because you would have to numb not to have insurance. Next up Virginia.
In Virginia you are required to have 25/50/20 but you can opt to pay a fee of $500.00 If the vehicle is uninsured, the motor vehicle owner is required to pay to DMV a $500 uninsured motor vehicle fee (ooooo is this like a tax like the Obamacare is said to require by the right wingers??) in addition to normal registration fees. Payment of the $500 fee does not provide the motorist with any insurance coverage. If involved in an accident, the uninsured motorist remains personally liable. This fee is valid for twelve months but may be prorated for a shorter amount of time. You really think anyone in Virginia is numb enough to drive with no insurance? They’d get sued and loose every asset they ever owned. So you see Maine gun guy YES you are require to have insurance or be wealthy enough to pay for any accident you are in every state but nice effort to mislead.
As far as the word marriage…..get over yourself. No one has trade marked the word and we heterosexual people do not own the word. What would you like the word to be? I know I be NASCAR would be fine with you Pfffffffft.
As far as our founding documents…..Amendments were a way for the constitution to be continually updated. Which is why we ADD things as the country grows and changes…..If you think the Constitution would be still applicable in every way the way it was written back in 1787 you have never had a political science class or an economics class or a history class…..which doesn’t surprise me at all. If you don’t want to have Obamacare pay the fee for NOT having health insurance – just like Virginia requires a fee for choosing NOT to have car insurance…….there’s your choice as an American.
Then you don’t know what Hell is like.
Nor do you… you just think you do cuz you’ve been suckered in by man-made mythologies.
You’ve been wrong many times before !
Of course, you could be wrong.
Most (not every) religion warns of hell because religion requires some pecuniary element to legitimize itself. It hearkens to the parts of our psychology shared with more primitive species, and allows for a way of subverting the higher order thought processes that would obviously reveal religion to be the absurdity that it is.

Yes well in all the Nancy Drew books she mentions her friend ‘George’…..that being said there is no empirical evidence that ‘George’ ever existed- just because a book of FICTION says she did….so what empirically based evidence do you have to support your claim that ‘hell’ exists? and please don’t say the bible….because the bible is not empirical evidence. Oy
Oh, my friend, every major religion teaches that Hell exists, a place of burning and torment, for the simple reason that Hell exists.
How do we know?
The Bible warns us, the founders of the other religions warn us, and people who have been there and back warn us.
Please stop shaking your fist in God’s face.
Yes, thank you for on the one hand reminding us that “every major religion” teaches that Hell exists, and that we all better turn to ONE religion to save our souls. Blah, blah, blah. People like you, two-faced and hypocritical, are exactly why I left the church. And you then punctuate your rant with “people who have been there and back.” Oy!
Every major religion is created by men. That’s all it is.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2CXuGM5Jzo
First, you say “every religion on earth warns of hell (sic).” Then you go on to tell everyone that to avoid Hell they must turn to Christ (that’s ONE religion). Sorry, chummy, can’t have it both ways.
And dont forget that Santa can “see you when your sleeping”
If hell has all those that support diversity, SEND ME TO HELL BABY!!! Because being with judgemental, closed minded, fools would be worse than a place where the rainbow is welcome.
Your comments are proof of Romans Chapter 1.
The Apostle Paul says that they denied God, and then fell into homosexuality, and were given over to a “depraved mind.”
You do not know what Hell is, or you would not say this.
Your mythology is yours… why do you feel it should be forced onto those who do not want it?
Saw this on another comment board and I thought it was pretty funny.
“Yes, boycott Oreo for their support of Gay Rights. While you’re at it, throw away your iPod, iPhone and iPad since Apple supports as well. You’ll need to ditch your Levi’s & Nike’s too. Bought them at… JC Penney’s or Sears? You’ll have to take them back. Flying somewhere soon? Better not be on American, Delta, Southwest or United… you’ll need a new ticket. Airline wasn’t mentioned? Just be sure your jet isn’t Boeing made. Don’t sleep at Marriott or Hilton (or any of their family brands) because you might catch the gay they support. That morning coffee from Starbucks will have to go as well, go ahead and replace it with a McCafe… oh wait, McDonald’s supports gay rights too. Do you clean with Tide, Gain or Bounty? Use Duracell batteries, shave with Gillette or use Fixodent? Brush with Crest, use Pantene, Scope,Tampax, Venus or Old Spice products? Those are all gone too, Proctor & Gamble support the gays. Using Internet Explorer or Chrome to see Facebook? Download something else, Microsoft & Google show their Pride as well. Coca-cola, Pepsi & Budweiser are on your side…if your side is on the right side of history since all three also support Gay Rights. Drive that big, manly Ford F350? Ford and General Motors support the rights of all.”
Thank you for sharing this! It just became my facebook status!!
And God who made Heaven and earth is against it. Repent.
Get your own ducks in a row before you start criticizing others. How about that?
And that is YOUR OPINION, based on a book written by MEN.
God condemns rape, not love.
Your god matters to you… not to everyone.
We live under civil law, not your version of a theocracy. Keep your mythology, but don’t expect to force it onto the society around you.
Gee THAT is great news……and while ‘god’ is busy forgiving the sinners….you think she/he could squeeze in a little time do something about famine or war or cancer or other diseases or poverty or civil rights or…..well it’s a long list which never seems to get addressed……
Those evils you mentioned are man’s doing.
and remind me again who ‘made’ man in his image and why did he flood the world murdering everyone but a few who were living in a houseboat with a few pets? Guess ‘god’ has some self improvement to do….
“Forgive them Father, for they know not what they do.” – Jesus Christ, as he was being nailed to the cross.
Should have used twinkies.
I pray to Thor, the god of Thunder. He uses a hammer, I wonder if there is a connection…
Stop blaspheming God.
Wait, if man was created in god’s image… how come we aren’t all invisible?
Your religion is man’s doing.

Thank you Oreo and Kraft. I am a loyal eater of your cookies and I am also a stockholder. I will stand by you as you are standing by me, letting everyone know that your corporate opinion is that I should be proud of who I am as a person. I take pride in that. Thank you for your support.
People who are anti-gay rights usually base their opinion on their belief that being gay is simply a lifestyle choice. These are the same ignorant beings who believed that people of color were inferior. Stupid is as stupid does.
Agreed, gay are more susceptible to advertising. Probably not more than children, but close. Like children, they believe in everything.
Wow, waste no chance to voice derision about gay people, do you? Why do you obsess about it so?
are they trying to figure out how big a cookie one can stick in their mouths?
It went right over your head didn’t it?
It usually does.
That cookie is just asking for someone to “eat me.”
Boycott Oreo’s? What kind of person woudl eat that nasty chemical mix of all kinds of nasty to begin with? I do not care what color they are or who they support. The fact that anyone would put one in there mouth says more then anything else about them.
Why is it religious zealots feel that their religion should be made law?
Don’t they realize it can’t even be entered into court cases?
It’s a choice and nothing more.
