BANGOR, Maine — A Bangor man was arrested on domestic violence assault and other charges early Thursday morning after he allegedly assaulted his fiancee, whom he was not supposed to be with as part of his bail conditions.
Matthew Adams, 26, also was charged with criminal mischief, drug possession and theft charges as well as violating the conditions of a previous arrest. At the time of his arrest, he also was wanted on an active warrant, Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards said Monday, citing an arrest report.
Edwards said that police were called to his fiancee’s Curve Street apartment shortly after 1 a.m., after he allegedly struck her in the face, causing a swelling above her right eye.
When the 911 call was placed to Bangor police, Adams was standing outside the apartment building. He was gone, however, by the time Officer Gary Decker arrived, Edwards said. Adams reportedly had walked off toward Court Street.
“She said they’re engaged to be married and that he currently had a bail condition,” Edwards said, citing the arrest report. “Despite that, she allowed him to move in.”
After she was assaulted, the victim went to the home of a friend, who let her in and called police.
When Officer Gary Decker entered the apartment the two shared, he found that Adams had destroyed videotapes and other belongings, which resulted in the criminal mischief charge.
The officer also found an empty prescription drug bottle for clonazepam that did not belong to Adams on the floor.
Decker, who left after helping the victim fill out a domestic violence worksheet, was called back there a little over an hour later, when Adams’ fiancee asked that an ambulance take her to the hospital for treatment of her injuries. Afterward, she asked the officer to drive her and her friend home because she was afraid Adams might have returned there, Edwards said.
When they got back to her home, shortly before 5 a.m., they noted that a light that she had left on was turned off. Adams who was inside, asleep in a bedroom, was placed under arrest, Edwards said. He said that a subsequent search turned up the missing clonazepam, which led to the drug possession charge.

I will never understand what makes a woman put up with this kind of treatment by their significant other. If a male beats on a woman, he isnt a man, he is a mealy mouthed little puke that doesnt have the guts to take out his anger on another male. The court system is bad enough letting these guys out five minutes after they are arrested, but if the woman is just gonna let him right back in, then how can they possibly control the situation? Please ladies, love does not involve someone being physical with you in a mean and angry way. Never accept physicapl, mental, or verbal abuse from your partner. Get away, let him calm down and if he ever touches you, NEVER go back..
Very well said!!
Too bad these women’s self-esteem wasn’t high enough to realize this. Easier said than done, I guess, though I’ll never understand it either.
Many times fear of a worse beating for having called for help is part of the picture. Usually guys like this try to control every aspect of a woman’s life and leaves her feeling helpless to resist. Very sad. I wish this woman well and hope she can get help.
If he strikes you once, he will do it again. A leopard does not change their spots…
What is the matter with these women? Are men so scarce in Bangor that you have to put up with this kind of treatment?
What’s the matter with these men that they have to beat women?
I guess the bulldozer stopped about 100 feet too short when it ran Curve Street under. Can we send a crew over there and finish the job?
How about you tell us what street you live on, Bangorian? We’ll send the bulldozer right over to your hood!
Why would anyone want to actually marry and have kids with this guy? Brand his forehead with a huge L so other women will be warned to not waste their time!
sorry but, some like my sister, would think the l was for lover.
If he makes bail she’ll allow him back. Sad.
A couple days ago a women was arrested for beating her ex.. why do men keep picking abusive women as their partners.. That woman will always be abusive because a leopard doesn’t change it’s spots.
Did we even read the same article??
Why isn’t she being charged with anything? She let him move in although he was already on bail. What happened is wrong no doubt, but she too should be held partially responsible for what happened. But no, it is always entirely the guys fault. And people act surprised that the woman gets assaulted again.
