LAMOINE, Maine — Someone, or several someones, has a problem with Lamoine mailboxes.
The Hancock County Sheriff’s Department fielded more than 40 reports of mailboxes smashed overnight Saturday and Sunday on several roads in Lamoine and one road in Trenton. That’s on top of dozens of others over the past three weeks.
Attacks have been concentrated on Shore, Needle’s Eye and Partridge Cove roads in Lamoine and on Jordan River Road in Trenton. No residences seem to have been specifically targeted in what seem to be senseless acts of destruction.
Deputy Chris Sargent said Monday that this kind of vandalism is par for the course during Hancock County summers, but the number of incidents recently is different than in previous years.
“This happens pretty much any summer,” he said. “Whether it’s paintballs or mailboxes being smashed or some combination of the two. This year, though, it’s been consistent.”
Sargent said some calls are from residents who have seen their mailboxes destroyed more than once — some as many as three times in recent weeks. While the Sheriff’s Department is pursuing leads, it’s a difficult crime to track.
“It’s a very difficult thing to investigate,” Sargent said. “There’s not a lot of evidence, no smoking gun.”
Sargent asks residents to report any suspicious activity or vehicles they see in the area.

Actually, I was thinking, just fill one with cement and remount. Curious to see what kind of upper extremity injuries occur when somebody in a moving vehicle swings a bat at what they think is a thin walled aluminum box but is really solid concrete.

And they break their arms and you have a lawsuit/criminal case pending, because someone smashed a mailbox you decided itd be a good idea to go Schwarzenegger on them. Not really too good of an idea. Perhaps you should just go smash a mailbox, you know, get that frustration out. Might do you some good. Probably better then a vengeful act done simply to cause bodily harm to another human who truly did nothing to you. Pretty cruel wishing to break someone’s arms because they hurt your mailbox… You and the mailbox you arnt like…… in love…. are you? Cause thats something you do when your in love. Ive heard of strange stuff before, like guys in love with cars, but never a mailbox. Hey, you should try to get on TV!

I pass one everyday that has a heavy duty iron on both sides like this and a steel target on a spring on top.. I laugh not because its silly looking..I laughed because its unique and necessary . :-/
What the heck.. people have trouble trying to pay their bills. These people have to take money out of their own pockets to replace their mailboxes. People shouldn’t have to add “Bars” or seal their mailboxes or cement. I bet its just a bunch of punk kids with nothing better to do. Maine never used to be like this. I can understand paintballing and maybe spraypaint, but every mailbox that was destroyed.. how are these people going to get their bills/paychecks/insurance cards… what the heck is wrong with these people?
On one hand, it’s a harmless teenage prank.
On the other hand, people who perpetrate this kind of expensive vandalism for kicks are displaying a disturbing lack of empathy for others and probably exhibit other sociopathic tendencies.

It’s only a matter of time before somebody catches them on camera. Let’s see, $10,000 and three years for each box. I hope they have their bags packed.
For smashing mailboxes you’d be content with that sorta punishment? 10k and 3 years for each box would make you happy? So lets see that’s nearly half a million dollars and 120 years in prison for… smashing mailboxes… And that’s reasonable? …… I need to move.
DevilDude..just stop smashing mailboxes and you have nothing to worry about. It really sounds like you have something to do with this the way you are defending it.
