ALTON, Maine — A Milo motorcyclist suffered injuries that were not life-threatening on Thursday afternoon when a shirt or jacket hanging off the back of his motorcycle got caught in the rear wheel, sending the bike out of control, police said.

The accident happened around 4:15 p.m. on Bennoch Road. David Sonnenberg, 38, was traveling toward Old Town, according to Maine State Police Trooper Christopher Cookson.

Sonnenberg was unconscious for several minutes after the crash but was speaking with responders before he was placed into an ambulance and taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center.

Cookson said Sonnenberg was wearing a helmet.

Both lanes of Bennoch Road were closed after the accident, causing traffic to back up until crews reopened the road around 5 p.m.

Maine State Police, Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department and fire and rescue crews from Old Town and Alton assisted at the crash.

      1. Yay for leather jackets, pants, boots.. Keeps you from getting the massive road burn should you take a flip. Not fun to end up in the emergency room having the nice nurse scraping the bloody skin off.

        1. Many years ago I was in a local ER where my parents were working (MD and Charge Nurse).  I was 14 and hanging around (probably grousing) waiting to go home with them. A 2-person motorcycle accident came in…even though I was only on the periphery, I have never forgotten how both riders–who were wearing helmets and leathers–got completely shredded, the woman in particular as she slid on her side up the road after being thrown. That did it for me–any nascent bike fantasies went right out the window permanently!

          Glad this guy is okay.

          1. I wonder what the outcome would have been if they were wearing jeans and T-shirts.  They probably would have died..
Glad you shared your story.. The power of a cycle can’t be underestimated, even the best riders can lose control.

          2.  Oof! Makes me cringe when I see a woman in a tank top and shorts clinging on to a shirtless man without helmets on a bike. I can’t even imagine taking that risk.

      1. If people in cars would put their cell phones down while driving, maybe we wouldn’t need the loud pipes. Mine have saved my bacon more than once. Yes I where a helmet and leather, and no, I never use the cell while driving my cage.

  1. Glad this fellow rider is safe…thanks, dude, for wearing your helmet! We nees smart rider! Please get some suitable storage on your ride! Speedy recovery!

  2. If you were to believe the United Bikers of  Maine , if  he chose not to wear a helmet, he wouldn’t have even been involved in the  accident.

There’s no doubt whatsoever that helmets save lives and massive head injuries.  Common sense should tell riders that protecting your head with a helmet is probably more important than wearing leather chaps and a bandana.

    1. You are wrong, have you ever attended a UBM meeting? I have NEVER heard anyone say if you choose not to wear a helmet, you won’t be involved in any accidents.
Where do you get the crap you spew anyway?

  3. Glad you will be ok guy. Now next time don’t leave your shirt and/or jacket where they get caught in the wheel. Speedy recovery.
