FALMOUTH, Maine — An elderly man who police believe was suffering from a medical condition Thursday afternoon reportedly is OK after he led them on a slow-speed pursuit.
Robert Millington, 77, of South Portland was clocked going 52 mph in a 35-mph zone on Middle Road around 3 p.m. Thursday, according to Falmouth police Lt. John Kilbride.
When Sgt. George Savage tried to stop Millington, he took off in his blue Dodge pickup. Millington’s truck stopped briefly on Lunt Road after he turned onto that street from Middle Road, the lieutenant said.
That’s when the pickup reportedly started to weave into oncoming traffic. Kilbride said Millington came close to hitting six cars after turning from Lunt Road onto Falmouth Road.
Police eventually got Millington stopped and boxed the truck in. Millington reportedly put the vehicle in reverse and hit Savage’s front bumper, but the cruiser received minimal damage, according to Kilbride.
Officers could tell Millington appeared confused, as he had the heater on in his truck on a humid afternoon.
“It must’ve been 300 degrees in the truck,” Kilbride said.
Millington was taken to Maine Medical Center to be checked out and later was released.
Charges are unlikely in connection with the chase, Kilbride said.
“All indications are that he was [suffering from a medical problem],” said Kilbride.

I find it hard to believe that going 52 mph in a 35 mph zone is legal, and considered a SLOW speed chase??? Say nothing about the damage to the cruiser, weaving into on-coming traffic, and the officer is citing no charges? Seriously, medical condition or not, this driver certainly put the lives of others at risk and should be cited for at least something???? Your doing no favor to him or the other residents in Falmouth.
If this was a young person in full mental control, they MIGHT learn a lesson. If this elderly guy hit someone, I’d say he should be arrested.
Well where were you? Why didn’t you offer an elderly person a ride to where they need to go? How many elderly in your neighborhood do you just drive by and not ask if they need their lawn mowed or a ride some place or help with something? Do you offer a solution to this sort of problem for the elderly?
Somehow I think not.

Darlin ,my next door neighbors have some serious health problems, he has alzheimers. Both are in their 80’s. We have taken over their lawn care, pick up their grocery’s another neighbor, plows and helps with the lawn. Yes they have kids who help but they live far enough away to make it impossible to make a daily trip.
Thank you to you and your neighbors. You are the kind of neighbors everyone should have. You have taken the responsibility to help your elderly neighbors, something not many will do.
Thank-you, but you know I can’t take much credit, my family has always been that way. We’re not rich neither are we trying to look like saints.
Darn it makes you feel good about yourself when you do something for someone in need and expect nothing in return.

Glad I read this, I have a medical restricted drivers license, if I think I’m going to get pulled over, I’m going to turn my heat on High, and act stupid, then blame it on my medical condition and I wont get a ticket!!!

All joking aside, glad the guy is ok, but what about the lives that he did put into danger? Even a slow speed chase @ 50 mph weaving at traffic could have resulted in injury.
It sounds to me like he was going that fast when they first clocked him…the chase itself sounded slow as it states he even stoped for a minute at one point. I didn’t take it as he was going 50 the whole time.
I hope this man is okay and glad no one got hurt. Sounds like he could have been suffering from a stroke which could strike at any time without warning. I was with my mom during one of her strokes and she was completely confused. She thought something was wrong with me and kept asking if I was okay.

I’m curious as to what type of medical condition he would be suffering that is so short term that he is released the same day, and can continue to drive? No offense to the elderly, but this gentleman should not be driving any longer because he apparently suffers from bouts of short termed illness which, if driving, could and will eventually hurt someone else which is supported by the actions he took this time. For the safety of everyone else, strip his license. If that means you have to charge him to do it then charge him. No different than someone who suffers occasional seizures. Sad one would have to take his license, but it is what it is.
