BRUNSWICK, Maine — A 29-year-old Brunswick man was taken into protective custody and hospitalized Friday night after Brunswick police found him in the bottom of a portable toilet on a disc golf course on River Road.
Officers responded to Enman Disc Golf just before 6 p.m. for a report that a naked male was causing a disturbance on the golf course, Deputy Police Chief Marc Hagan said today.
Initially, police could not locate the man, who witnesses said had been rolling in mud, tipping over trash cans and sitting in the disc goals.
After locating a backpack containing clothing, they called for a police canine to help search, but then found the man inside a portable toilet.
Hagan said the man did not respond to voice commands, but eventually Brunswick fire personnel were able to get him out of the toilet and into flexible handcuffs.
After he was sprayed down, he was taken to Mid Coast Hospital.

Ummm, wonder who got that short straw? Someone had to touch him first to get him out . I can see them all standing there saying, I’m not gonna do it , you do it.
Sam a hug at the time might have helped his self esteem..
Man, that would be like a pig scramble !
The probie.
This may be exactly what tasers were made for …
I agree !
Perfect! thanks for making me laugh today..I needed that!
No problem ! This whole story and comments gave me a chuckle all day.
Holy Crap!
What a horror show
So were do you put someone who so obviously needs psychiatric help when you’ve closed all the hospitals which provide that service? Oh I know, you put them back on the street until a space opens up at a facility which has only been downsized until some future year when it too will close. Those of you who think you do not pay for the medical care of those in need under the current system should ponder this, who is paying for the police, the ambulance, the hospital, and all of these public services the next two or three times this person goes over the top? Now wouldn’t it really make more sense to provide the proper services in the first place? Wouldn’t that be cheaper and better for all?
Who closed all the hospitals… Angus maybe???
How about Reagan and his wife? They closed more mental health facilities than any other politician. That’s when America’s homeless problem started, and when people stopped being able to get help for their illnesses.
Just what did Nancy have to do with it? Astrology?
Are you even old enough to remember when that all went down in our country?
I remember JFK’s election and voted in the Nixon-McGovern election.
Ya, I’m old enough.
Reagan was pretty clearly well into Altimers in the middle of his second term. Nancy would stage whisper to him what to say when he spoke in public. She was his closest and most trusted advisor so she was more in charge of the presidency than anyone else for a few years.
He would forget people’s names at times, but he wasn’t diagnosed with the onset of actual Alzheimer’s until about 4-5 years after he was out of office. That’s the way I remember it. Maybe you read something in an unauthorized biography; I believe you to be incorrect.
he wasn’t DIAGNOSED til 4-5 years after … that means the onset probably started much sooner. he showed the signs.
“he wasn’t diagnosed with the ONSET….. until about 4-5 years after….” is what I said. I just checked Wiki just to see if my old pre-onset memory was correct.
All of my Father’s siblings died with the affliction, including him and their mother, so I’m a bit tuned into the progression of the disease.
In all reality…..you can’t diagnose Alzheimer’s until AFTER death!!! They have to examine the brain to see.
I remember seeing him at several events and knowing he was in the initial stages. I was not alone in that perception, not by a long shot. I was a Reagan supporter and it saddened and frightened me.
The official announcement of his diagnoses came about 4 years later when he withdrew completely from the public view because it had gotten so bad. That does not happen overnight
Edited to add: Here’s a first hand account from someone who also saw the issues up close:
http://www.amazon.com/Reporting-Live-Lesley-Stahl/dp/B000C4STY8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1341958480&sr=8-1&keywords=Reporting+Live%2C+Stahl
Reagan was as shriveled as a kumquat. He was so frail, his skin so paper-thin. I could almost see the sunlight through the back of his withered neck…His eyes were coated. Larry introduced us, but he had to shout. Had Reagan turned off his hearing aid?
…Reagan didn’t seem to know who I was. He gave me a distant look with those milky eyes and shook my hand weakly. Oh, my, he’s gonzo, I thought. I have to go out on the lawn tonight and tell my countrymen that the president of the United States is a doddering space cadet. My heart began to hammer with the import…I was aware of the delicacy with which I would have to write my script. But I was quite sure of my diagnosis.
You may be right. I attributed his occasional forgetfulness to his advanced age and the toll of two terms (the job does age them fast). See my reply to G Mott below.
I see that you’ve added Ms. Stahl’s observation. Wiki gives some of that quote, but also adds that later, she adjusted her observation.
” Leslie Stahl recounts her final meeting with the president, in 1986: “Reagan didn’t seem to know who I was. … Oh, my, he’s gonzo, I thought. I have to go out on the lawn tonight and tell my countrymen that the president of the United States is a doddering space cadet.” But then, at the end, he regained his alertness. As she described it, “I had come that close to reporting that Reagan was senile.”
Flitting in and out of cognition is very much indicative of the early stages of Alzheimer’s.
Sad;y I know this quite intimately from being the primary caregiver for someone suffering from this vile, horrid affliction.
It appears that Ms Stahl did not have that knowledge.
The closing had to do with a court case… Peoples basic Freedom to not being held without due process and against their will.
No, Many mental hospitals closed because of a court case in the Carter Administration if memory serves. Many folks had been previously-committed that had been determined to not be a danger to self or others. When the law changed that people could not be so easily committed many people were released to live on the streets. It was also convenient to blame Reagan for an increase in homelessness.
Don’t automatically blame mental problems. Maine has far more problems with substance abuse than inbreeding. And please don’t start with all the causes of being ‘different’.It IS just as likely that he was just messed up.
How would you know? Are you a reformed user? I didn’t think so. Me neither. Don’t you understand that there are people who just plain need our help?
Well do you understand that there are substance abusers out there that ALSO need help?? This does sound as though it could be bathsalts as well as maybe mental people jump to conclusions too much around here! Also how can you tell from someones comment if they have been a drug user? Wait assuming I forgot.
Ya, you certainly are assuming.
People with mental problems don’t go for a soak in port-a-potty pit!
They would have to wait in line, behind the “bath salts” folks.
People with mental problems do go for soaks in port-a-potties, a delusional schizophrenic would if he/she believed it was the Fountain of Youth. As for the Bath Salt folks, they are sick too, some with physical addiction, and some… wait for it… with mental addiction.
And don’t you understand that it’s just as likely (more so actually) that he’s just doped up?
I was pointing out that it’s a toss up and not automatically mental health.
Being doped up is, in fact, a mental health issue.
There’s no arguing that being doped up messes up the mind, alright.
Even more of an issue are medication adjustments, self-medication, drug interactions with alcohol, etc., and simply running out of meds or going off them. We have a few who wander our neighborhood, mostly calm and quietly talking to the ‘others’, but at times highly agitated, affected gait, esp. Tourrett’s people.
If this was kid, there’s a good chance his meds came from the school; and I don’t know what they do when school is out.
Gotta cry B.S. on that one. That is an overused excuse for a lot of people. Not all, but a lot. “I need meds for my anxiety” or “I have anti-social disorders and can’t work with the public, so I sit around all day and now need pain meds for my back from sitting around”. A lot of people are just trying to rationalize their addictions and come with undiagnosed mental health issues as the answer.
Maine has far more problems with drug abuse than inbreeding? Inbreeding may be the cause of mental illness in your family but it doesn’t fit everyone.
I thought that would get a rise out of people. But if you read that line by itself, it’s true. Not much inbreeding but lots of drug abuse.
Okay, you got me. I can live with that.
Spring Harbor Hospital is open for inpatient. There are 100’s (yes look it up) of outpatient programs in Maine for this in need with mental issues…..
Sometimes, outpatient care doesn’t cut it. It takes weeks and sometimes months to re-adjust meds when someone has been without theirs for awhile. Without the facilities, there is no help.
Ever think of Bath Salts? (as opposed to mental illness…although you have to be mental to use bath salts!)
I agree, this article screams bath salts… nakedness is a sign of bath salt users, it raises their temperature to dangerous levels.
Mental health care for medically ill, yet treatable, transients who come through Brunswick in the summer for a vacation using the bus; is difficult to schedule and provide. Nor is it possible to easily deal with people in the rural parts of town, i.e. where the disc golf facility is located on River road. My guess is seriously overdosed on drugs, and a psychotic reaction…far, far from any treatment facility. Maybe he was searching for a stash he ‘heard/knew’ was in that porta potty, making this more a police response than a crisis intervention.
In any case, they come to town with their lists of social service/food/lodging facilities and cell phones and ‘take a vacation’ on their own terms.
Among my favorites, was the guy dressed as Jesus who would walk the neighborhoods preaching….unfortunately, it didn’t do much good as any resident of Brunswick can tell you.
If you’re going to blame anybody for deinstitutionalization, blame liberal academics and psychiatrists back in the 60 s and 70s. They spearheaded this movement and we have paid the price ever since.
“After he was hosed down….” LOL
hmmmm… bath salts?
he could certainly use some…. the actual bath kind
Dad; sleep walking again ?
thats just nasty must have been on bath salts any normal person wouldn”t hide in the bottom of a porta pottie even if they were high
nothing in the story mentioned normal… (-;
http://www.pressherald.com/archive/pittston-man-charged-with-climbing-in-toilet_2009-08-31.html He was hiding in the toilet in 2005, long beofre bath salts was a problem. Not that he is normal…but yeah, gross…just gross.
He was just skinny dipping at the public pool!
he thought he was going to see the browns at the superbowl
Rock, paper, scissors anyone?
witnesses said he had been rolling in mud – that wasn’t mud, friends!
alot of strange stuff is happening on golf carts lately, 1st a drunken drummer in Bangor and now a naked man in Brunswick…Lord help us….
That’s a s+*%&y situation!
I’ll bet the police didn’t say “Come out or we’ll send the dog in!” And just think how worried the dog must have been…..
Good headline anyway!
They make a good place to hide your stash..hint, hint.
Bath salts
bath salts and corn
That’s just sick…..thanks for the laugh!
sorry but that is gross.. ugh!
problem solved…..get him a job cleaning with one of the porta-potty companies ,have you been in one lately…
but they finally found something that’ll sober up somebody on bath salts!!!
He must misinterpreted the rule of a skins game in golf… just a misunderstanding.
I believe in culling the herd, having worked in a mental instution in the early 70’s I feel a nice injection of a get out of the population so you are not a burden on society is in order for many! Rapists, child molesters, and idiots that nakedly slide into porta potties. We would be better off in this world without social misfits. Cull the herd!!!
There were some in Germany who turned toward such inclinations in the early 1930s.
By 1945, about 50 million humans (world wide) had been “culled” … Just Saying.
