BOSTON — Five people accused of bilking the state out of more than $117,000 combined in unemployment benefits while holding down steady jobs will be arraigned tomorrow in two separate courts by prosecutors for Attorney General Martha Coakley’s office.
Andrea Mom Ieng, 39, of Lowell, Mass., will answer to 24 counts of unemployment fraud and larceny in Boston Municipal Court for the $10,464 in benefits prosecutors say she cashed in between May and November 2010 while working full time and earning a $26,754 salary.
Gary Alvarado, 29, of Brockton; Justin Otting, 31, of South Berwick, Maine; Robert Reynolds, 42, of Hudson, N.H.; and Zelda Williams, 52, of Randolph will be arraigned on similar charges in Suffolk Superior Court.
Alvarado is charged with 59 counts of unemployment fraud and larceny.
Authorities said he received $35,105 in benefits between March and November 2010 while earning $34,477 from a full-time job.
Otting stands accused of 31 counts of unemployment fraud and larceny. It’s alleged Otting collected $10,890 in benefits while earning close to $14,000 working for three different employers.
Reynolds, who prosecutors said received $42,796 in benefits between January 2008 and May 2010 while earning $92,491 from his job, is charged with 89 counts of unemployment fraud and three counts of larceny.
Williams is charged with 49 counts of unemployment fraud and larceny. Authorities said she collected $18,342 from the state between November 2008 and October 2009, while earning $35,521.
None of the accused could be reached yesterday for comment.

  1. Ring em up. Seek cooperation from family, friends, neighbors, people who cash checks, etc. Publicize 800 number where reports can be made. According to many who comment on here, they are aware of these cheaters and scammers. Let’s make it easy for reporting these crudders.

  2. These are the same type of charges that the dem’s deny repeatedly.  Just saying…….

    1. If the proof is there, and they go to trial, how can the “dems deny the charges.”  How do you know that these aren’t all card carrying tea baggers?  Is what you’re saying that the system is completely overwhelmed with fraud, or just that you know, and have the statistics, that the fraud from the damn unemployed is far greater than the dems will admit?  So now if you don’t have a job and are collecting unemployment, its quite likely you are commiting fraud?  Big leap, grasshopper.

  3. These people should be barred from unemployment or any other benefits for life. Because the courts will not lock them up.

  4. Tip of the iceburg, but the the dems say its rare for someone to abuse welfare, unemployment, medicade, medicare, methedone clinics, Maine care, subsidized housing, and the dozens of other freebies doled out in exchange for votes.

    1. How about going after the wire and banking fraud that enriched the Wall St. scumbags beyond their wildest dreams?  Oh, wait, the rich ripping off everyone else and rewarding themselves with obscene bonuses is O.K.  These guys will get maxed, which they should, while those that made millions will clink their glasses together and laugh at the obedient Koch parrots.

        1. Exactly.  I agree 100%.  There’s more than enough left right and center from the Wall St. gang to hang them all together.  Along with all the Rep and Dems that Abramoff owned for years.  It’s the patently obvious ones I was referring to, such as the original poster, that believe everything they’re spoon fed.  It’s funny how a guy that steals a case of beer does years of prison time on the “third strike” while someone who steals millions and ruins many, many lives gets to skate.  Well, except for Bernie Madoff and a couple others.  Got to feed the masses a  couple of sacrificial pigs occasionally.  Helps avoid revolt.

      1. Show me where the Republicans defend welfare abuse as minor and insignificant like the dems do…and keep up with the leftist propaganda they spoon feed you.

      2.  How about we just make everybody support themselves and hold EVERY person responsible for there OWN actions!!!

    2. Can’t blame it all on the Democrats. There have been plenty of Republicans in office around the country who have either expanded the system or done nothing to stop it.

  5. I blame a lot of this on the gov for allowing all the state positions that recieve paychecks and have to do nothing for them.the gov. and lawmakers should have taken care of them when it was brought to their attention months ago but it is hard to break up the good old boys club that soaks the tax payer.

  6. The sentence should include a lifetime ban on all public benefits, and have to pay in at the single rate tax payer for life.

  7. How long does it take to check the payroll tax records I thought these were sent in quarterly.

    1. If you work while collecting unemployment compensation in the same state you probably would get nailed much sooner.  I suspect these cases involve people who found work in another state and thought they would get away with fraud that way.The IRS only gets a form 1099-G with an unemployment compensation total for the year. A mix of 1099-G and W-2 income for a person seen by the IRS would be very normal in most cases.  For example, you have seasonal workers (like construction, school bus drivers, etc.).

  8. I wonder if these people are still laughing all the way to the bank, for thinking they had pulled this off and not been caught.

  9.  “Authorities said [Alvarado] received $35,105 in benefits between March and November 2010 while earning $34,477 from a full-time job.” So this guy collected 35k in 9 months? No wonder so many people are on welfare if you can collect $3800/mo to sit on your kiester. That amount is more than the salary of some educated college grads with serious jobs that I know..hmph
