FAIRFIELD, Maine — Authorities are investigating after a 3-month-old baby died in the care of a baby sitter at a Fairfield home.
Police say the baby sitter called police early Sunday morning to report that the infant was not breathing.
The baby’s parents live in Clinton and had arranged for the child to spend the night at the baby sitter’s home.
Emergency officials arrived just six minutes after the emergency call at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday but the infant was pronounced dead at MaineGeneral Medical Center’s Thayer campus. An autopsy is scheduled.
Authorities have not described the death as suspicious and no charges have been filed, but police tell the Morning Sentinel the death of any child aged three years or younger automatically triggers an investigation by state police.

I think one may want to re-word the headline in this story. the headline states TODDLER but the story states 3 MONTH OLD INFANT, theres a big difference. My heart goes out to the parents of this child. I cannot imagine what you are going through at this time.
Please correct the headline or the article. The baby was either 3 months old or a 3 year old toddler, but not both. While young infants do sometimes die from SIDS, 3 year old’s just don’t, so it matters quite a bit.
Toddler, 3…OR…infant, 3months??? Which would be the more appropriate headline? Headline says the story is about a 3 yr. old toddler, but the story is about a 3 mon. old infant! Which is it?
My thoughts are with the family and sitter. How horrible :(
Very tragic,
no parent should ever have to endure a death of their child.
condolences to the family.
Who edits these articles? Circus monkeys? Headline says toddler, 3…article says 3 months.
Being a Mother myself, I am overly saddened by this article. I agree with AncientLegacy, “No Parent should ever have to endure a death of their child.”My thoughts and prayers are with the baby’s family. God bless.
Very sad and tragic. Thoughts to all of those involved…parents, babysitter, etc.
Okay. I agree that reporters need to do a bit of a better job getting the stories straight and editing their texts sometimes, but come on. Does it REALLY matter if this child was 3 months or a 3-year-old toddler? A parent has lost a child. Age of the child isn’t going to change a thing in my reaction. As a parent, it wouldn’t matter if that child was 50 years old. It’s still my child.
On a professional level, YES, it DOES matter!!! NEWS agencies are paid to report the NEWS CORRECTLY and should be held accountable and to that standard.
On a personal level, no it doesn’t matter.
My heart wins out over my need for everyone to be professional every single time when I hear something like this. Shame, shame.
Well, that’s you. The rest of us care that the professional, paid news reporters are held accountable to write accuate headlines for their published news stories. Shame, shame on them.
yes i understand its still someones child, my point was trying to distinguish if it were a child of 3mos or 3yrs. either way i still understand it is tragic i just thought it should have been reported accurately. i also feel sometimes stories like this should not be reported out of respect of the families involved. vehicle accidents and such are one thing but there are also some instances like this that get published and also many others of the same nature that go unpublished.
My heart goes out to all those involved in this tragic death.
Parents biggest nitemare. Just say prayers for mom and dad.
Rest peacefully little one.
To the parents, my sympathy. To BDN, stop this needless reporting, it onlys makes the hurt worse.
How terrible! Words cant even describe how this family must feel. I bet this was the parents first time leaving the baby overnight. I am so sorry for their loss may the baby rest in peace. <3
