ROCKLAND, Maine — A driver trying to pick up a dropped cracker is blamed for a crash Monday morning that sent two people to the hospital.
The injuries were not considered serious, according to Rockland police.
The crash occurred shortly after 9:30 a.m. on Route 17 in Rockland. Donald Webber, 76, of Rockland, was driving west and was slowing down to turn right into his driveway, according to Rockland police. At the same time, a 2003 pickup truck driven by Nicholas Berry, 23, no residence given, was heading in the same direction.
Investigating Officer Lloyd Daniels said Berry was eating and dropped a cracker. He bent over to get the cracker and when he looked up it was too late to avoid the crash.
The impact sent Webber’s 2002 pickup truck spinning and into a gully in front of his home.
He complained of pain to the back of his head. Both Webber and Berry were taken to Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport to be checked out for injuries.
Webber’s vehicle was considered destroyed and valued at about $8,500. Damage to Berry’s vehicle was estimated at $4,200.
No charges will be filed, Daniels said.
” No charges will be filed” How about distracted driving? DUH! What’s the sense in making laws the Police don’t enforce. Maybe the officer should have some time off without pay until he learns how to enforce the law.
What did the driver use for a defense-“it wasn’t my fault, officer. The cracker did it.”

The cracker eater has demonstrated he does not have the ability to control a vehicle. His license should be suspended immediately, and a drivers ed course should be completed before his license returned.
Perhaps he merely needs to take a course on the proper method of eating crackers.

If you caused an accident because you dropped something, would you actually admit what it was you dropped?
He must have forgotten question 8 on the permit test:
“Which is more important to give your full attention to behind the wheel?
(a) your driving
(b) your cracker
That sure is an expensive cracker. Could have waited to pick it up. Suppose he will learn his lesson?
It’s the “Jesus, Take the wheel” defense.
Now the legislature will take up most of the next session trying to pass a law banning crackers.
See, a dropped anything, not just a cell phone can cause a debilitating crash. Let it go…….
It’s not like your going to eat the cracker since it fell to the floor, are you? For the anal retentive *autistic people, it can be picked up or cleaned later when the car is safely parked.
I’ve heard of more accidents caused by people trying to pick up dropped items over the years than just cell phones.
*Who doesn’t have some autism in the way it is defined today.. Besides, I would think it could or would be a compliment since prodigies are on the autism spectrum, or have autistic traits. Who else has the attention span? Now remember to force that smile, make that awkward eye contact, and consciously try to act interested, or a possible employer will think you are shifty, untrustworthy, not that interested, and hire someone else, even though they say they are an equal opportunity employer, and people on the high end of the spectrum do not qualify for disability, and that’s if they ever get diagnosed.
I knew a girl who dropped a cigarette,ran a red light and got broadsided. Killed the passenger. Passenger happened to be her own mother. That was about 35 years ago,before cell phones. Saw a woman run over the sidewalk and take out a telephone pole because her toddler was screaming in the backseat because the kid had dropped a chicken mcnugget…….distracted driving has allways beens with us.
