FALMOUTH, Maine — A local woman hit a concrete barrier at a tollbooth Monday afternoon, flipping her vehicle upside-down but escaping with only minor injuries, WGME TV13 reports.

Nancy Lightbody of Falmouth said she is used to driving a standard vehicle, and accidentally stomped on the gas thinking she was down-shifting. She rammed into the barrier, and flipped her Honda CR-V into the opposite tollbooth, stopping between them.

The CR-V is in rough shape, but Lightbody suffered only minor cuts and scrapes. The toll-taker wasn’t hurt. Traffic was only moderately affected. There is no word of any charges in the incident.

  1. She “stomped on the gas thinking she was down-shifting”……quite extreme interstate driving…..Crazy…..

    1. I am curious if she should have her standard taking to a mechanic, if stomping your gas pedal causes you to downshift instead of accelerate, that is a problem I would think

  2. Public transportation is tailored to certain folks……Like this lady….. Glad to hear that no one was seriously hurt.

    1. This toll booth sits out in the middle of  NOWHERE…you get to approach it for 2 miles in either direction with NO distractions..

Warning signs and  flashing lights clearly announce that this toll booth is up ahead.   The approach is 10 mph.    No double clutching, no unfamiliarity with the vehicle…just distracted by something.   Thank God she didn’t get killed or hurt somebody.

I predict no charges will be forthcoming…this is the New Driving Normal.

    2.  That is one of the lamest excuses a driver could ever come up with. Face it, she was texting and when she looked up, it was too late.

  3. What was her left leg doing then? Maybe she thought it was a Ferrari and she was looking for the paddle shifter?

  4. No charges…WHAT??? come on, when did the clutch start being the right side pedal????  nice excuse for this lady to use so she doesnt get a ticket

  5. I drove standard for years before switching over to an automatic,  and I was always going for the clutch with my left foot, not my right.  And unless something is majorly wrong, don’t see how you’d confuse the two.

  6. Falmouth is a uppercrust area and most likely the person will not be charged.. and thats alright with me.

  7. The problem with cars that have automatic everything is that they facilitate mindless driving.  That could easily have been me…  I do, SO, understand it.  In 35+ years of driving, I never owned an automatic until last year when it was time for a new car and there was nothing I wanted in a stick.  After 3 days, I was a basket case…just didn’t feel like I was the one driving the car.  Fortunately, my darling spouse didn’t mind upgrading & giving me the older 5-speed.

  8. Last standard I drove when I downshifted, it didn’t affect my steering.

But then my wife always parks like this.

  9. If I was thinking I was driving a standard I would be stomping with my left foot and hit the brake if anything, certainly not the gas.   My right foot would automatically lift off of the gas as my left foot stomped.

I have a standard vehicle as well as an automatic, I often find myself trying to press the clutch in on the automatic and wind up just pressing floorboard!
