PINE CITY, N.Y., and BAR HARBOR – Lawrence L. “Larry” “Big Red” Higgins, 78, passed away peacefully Tuesday, July 17, 2012, at his daughter and son-in-law’s home in Pine City, N.Y. Larry was born Dec. 22, 1933, son of Carroll Higgins and Carro (Richardson) Higgins Webber.
Larry was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, serving his country during the Korean War. After his military service he moved to Southern California, where he raised his family. Larry was a letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service for 45 years. He moved to Pine City, N.Y, in November 2008 to be with his family. Larry was an avid California Angel’s baseball fan, and while living in California loved to go to Blackie’s By the Sea – a popular gathering place in Newport Beach. He was a devoted father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Larry was also an avid gardener and reader.
Larry is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Jean L. and Ernest Germano of New York, and Robyn M. and Jesse Richardson of Montana; grandchildren, Christopher Germano, Marie and husband, Chad Payne, Matthew Germano, and Michael Camporeale; great-grandchildren, Brody and Miles; stepmother, Marjorie Higgins of Bangor; sisters and brother-in-law, Carol Higgins of Bangor, and Jackie and Roy McFarland of Bar Harbor. He was predeceased by his wife, Shirley (Nagle) Higgins.
Friends are invited to meet with the family at 4:30-6 p.m. Sunday, July 22, at Jordan-Fernald, 1139 Main St., Mount Desert, where funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Monday, July 23. Interment with full military honors will be at Seal Harbor Cemetery, Seal Harbor.
