EUSTIS, Maine — An elderly man drowned Wednesday in Franklin County while he was training his dogs in Flagstaff Lake.

Cpl. John MacDonald of the Maine Warden Service said Leo Pepin, 81, of Stratton was training his hunting dogs on the shoreline near Flagstaff Road around 3:15 p.m. when he went into the lake to gather some equipment.

Pepin’s wife observed him enter the water and not resurface, and she summoned assistance from a neighbor, according to MacDonald.

Pepin’s body was retrieved in 10-15 feet of water by Eustis firefighters and Game Warden Scott Stevens, MacDonald said.
