MACHIAS, Maine — A former substitute teacher at the Ella Lewis School in Steuben who had sex with an eighth-grade student will spend a year in state prison for the crime.

Dianne Leach was sentenced July 13 in Superior Court by Justice Alan Hunter, whose ruling also requires her to be on probation for two years after her release and to be listed on Maine’s sex offender registry. In addition, Hunter ordered Leach to pay $2,100 in restitution to the victim’s family.

In April 2011, Maine State Police investigated allegations of an inappropriate relationship between Leach, 47, of Steuben and a male student. RSU 24 Interim Superintendent Wayne Enman then told the Bangor Daily News that the investigation was launched when another teacher confiscated the victim’s cellphone during a class and saw a text message from Leach that raised concerns.

The complaint filed in May claims that Leach engaged in sexual acts with the student in December 2010 and in March 2011. When charged, Leach entered a plea of no contest.

RSU 24 subsequently obtained a protection order against Leach requiring her to stay off all school properties.

  1. I can’t imagine why she wanted to have “relations” with a 14 year old boy in the first place, but even if faced with that urge it’s called “self control and common sense” I mean really, he’s not much more than a child and she is 47… gross…..

    1.  That’s right. I’m sure she could have found some older if she was giving it away.

  2. I am trying to imagine a world where a 47-year-old male teacher has sex with an 8th grade girl and then goes to jail for only one year.  It’s difficult to imagine.

  3. She got a year, but with the good behavior stuff they credit, she will probably only serve 7 or 8 months.  It also doesn’t say if she is a 10 year or life sex offender registrant, I’d bet 10 year.  Well, at least she can smile pretty for the camera for 10 years.  Oh, and like most of these situations, the 14 yr old seduced her, LOL.

    1. As sick as it is what she did, be happy to know that she is a LIFETIME REGISTRANT :-) Lets hope she is one of those stupid people that cant do well on probation and has to serve her whole 7 years that she got sentenced to. And i hope when she gets into population at the prison, she gets the warm welcome from all the ladies that dont like sex offenders!

  4. What the heck was she thinking? A 14 year old, boy or girl, is not old enough to consent to anything like this. She should have gotten the 20 years that a guy would have if it had been the other way around. Something in this system is broken and needs serious fixing.

  5. Talk about a gender biased sentence…1 year for having sex with a 14 year old boy? No picture smeared all over the place? If this was a man he would serve far longer and have his face plastered from here to eternity.

  6. Touch a kid and it should be a minimum mandatory sentence and that should damn well be more than a year.  Same across the board whether male or female.

  7. I wonder if this woman has children? If so, how old are they…older than this boy, I’d imagine…

Although I feel the sentence is not harsh enough…I do think this woman’s life will never quite be the same. Hopefully keeping her out of school systems will keep her from preying on young boys in the future.

Where exactly are children safe these days…?

  8. The teacher from Limerick just got 7 years. I’d like to know what is different about this case that only warranted a year?

    1.  I honestly don’t understand that either.
But there are differences about the cases, though to me they don’t justify the short sentence either.
One: A substitute teacher does not induce as much authority or respect as a regular teacher whom students see every day.
Two: The victim is younger in this case.
Three: This woman has to pay restitution, the other woman will not.
Four: This woman pleaded no contest, the other pleaded guilty.
and Five: The other woman allegedly gave her victim alcohol and marijuana, this woman must not have because there are no charges for furnishing drugs.

I don’t see a reason they both shouldn’t be in jail for 10 years or more.

  9. I have met this woman, I work for a service based company and she almost became one of our customers…not a pleasant woman. When we arrived onsite and notified her that she didn’t qualify for service (after testing of course) she started spouting vulgarities at us.

She had a very self-entitled attitude.

    1 year….what a joke.

Apparently child molestation has been downgraded to a misdemeanor in the state of Maine.

    meh
