BELFAST, Maine — City officials said Friday that they know the identity of the elderly “mystery” woman who takes the bus from Bangor to Belfast periodically to walk around town and revisit her old haunts.

The 89-year-old woman is shy and right now doesn’t want to be identified to the public, according to Belfast City Councilor Mike Hurley.

He and others in the community last week said they wanted to find the woman and make her “Queen of Belfast” during her next visit to the city.

“She doesn’t really want anything from us, but we’re working on it,” he said.

The Bangor woman used to spend summers with relatives in Belfast when she was growing up in the late 1920s and the 1930s. She loved the city so much that she would try to hide when it was time to leave at the end of the summer, Hurley said.

The woman is active, still walking between three and five miles a day, he said. When she takes the bus down from Bangor, she walks from the bus drop-off on Route 3, all the way to Belfast City Park, then to the Veteran’s Memorial Bridge and back again.

It’s quite a hike, and Hurley said that the woman once brought a friend from Bangor down with her, but neglected to tell her how far they would be walking.

“Just from City Park to the bridge is a long walk,” he said.

Belfast merchants have rallied around her story, offering to give her a night in a five-star hotel, lunch and dinner at many city eateries, shopping certificates, movie tickets, boat rides and a photo sitting by local photographer Charles DuFour.

After spreading the word of the search through local media, Hurley said he received a couple of phone calls earlier this week from her family members.

“I’ve talked to her a number of times. She seems like a really nice person,” he said. “It’s a sweet story. It’s kind of heartwarming, in these days of people having bad times, to see someone having a good time.”

  1. I’m not even trying to be that guy right now….but besides the impressive fact that this lady is 89 years old and walks more than I do each day…..I fail to see how this is “news”

    1.  You want blood and guts and robberies and mayhem and war?  This is the kind of story that should be front page–above the fold.

      1. so harassing an 89 year old lady who doesn’t want to be bothered or identified is “above the fold” in you book Freddie? Please.

        1. As usual you missed the point, randomness111.  I don’t know why I bother to reply.  It is a great human interest story–not the part about not wanting to be bothered, but that there is someone who loves Belfast so much and spends a lot of time there.  THAT’S the real story.  You seem to like to twist words and be obnoxious–you have succeeded in doing that.  Now then, go back to the National News on TV–watch the Denver massacre story again–should be right up your alley.  P.S.  I won’t be responding to any more of your replies–I can’t waste my time explaining stuff to insensitive people like you.

OK, I get that they’re trying to be kind. But what part of “No” don’t they understand?

    1. Agree. There are some people who enjoy the limelight, some who don’t care either way, and some who would rather die than be on the front page of the paper. It sounds like whoever is behind this needs to stop “working on it” and back off.

    1. I understand your statement, however PLEASE don’t judge “Belfast” on one man’s statement, lack of respect, or whatever you want to call it.  “Belfast” is a great town, however we have our share of idiots just like all other towns.  Thanks

      1.  It’s a joke ! You never had that training when you were younger from the public service announcement ? No one is making fun of Belfast…it’s a joke, a darn funny one at that…LOL !

          1.  I agree, she said she doesn’t want the attention so leave her be…and I love Belfast by the way :-)

    1.  Yes, that would be good!  And ice cream stands and hot dog stands.  You’ve come up with a good idea.  Thanks for the suggestion.

    2. Shhhh. If lemonade stands were reported on, the state would be slapping fines on every family. It’s better to keep them out of the news. But I get your point ;) haha

  3. this is all bout making money off this women. leave her alone she wants nothing . Just city trying to make porfit off her . Stay out of belfast it smells there like dead fish and hicks. Love live ROLLy’S.

  5. From bikers to little old ladies minding their own business,  Belfast harasses every one!

  6. WOW,  these  hurleyville flatlanders, have broken their rules,  bestowing something that is notable to a non-flatlander??

  7. this is why  Belfast is  dwindling  we have someone  willing to come to our great city enjoy our features  what does the city do  chase  them away think about it

  8. Such a wonderful, heartwarming story shared by BDN. Thank you!  And to those who would find something to crab about in a nice story like this:  shame on you.  Hurray for the health and strength of the woman, and hurray for Belfast for wanting to recognize her!

  9. I would guess that if people REALLY want to do something nice for this lady, they would just leave her alone with her memories, instead of forcing her to accept their idea of kindness.

  10.  Hey Mike, the shy lady isn’t interested, so leave her alone you big bully. Find another person to be your queen.
