CUTLER, Maine — The Little River Lighthouse in Cutler is opening its doors to the public.
Boats are leaving from the Cutler Town Boat Landing on Saturday morning to take visitors to the 15-acre island, where they can tour the restored keeper’s house, climb the tower, hike the trails and enjoy sea songs performed by local musicians.
The historic 1847 lighthouse, which is now on the National Register of Historic Places, was listed in 1996 by Maine Preservation as one of the state’s 10 most endangered historic properties. In 2002, the Little River Lighthouse ownership was transferred to a nonprofit group.
Another open house is scheduled for Aug. 4.
My wife and I hiked the Western Head trail a couple of weeks ago. We’ve hiked some of the other Bold Coast trails-All are breathtaking. The Western Head trail gives you a view of this lighthouse. This trail combines rocky beaches, wooded trails, and cliif walking-3.5 miles in length. God’s country!
