SAN JOSE, Calif. — Fire officials in California say at least 21 people were treated for burns after attendees of an event for motivational speaker Tony Robbins tried to walk on hot coals.

The San Jose Mercury News reports that at least three people went to a hospital and most suffered second- or third-degree burns.

Robbins was hosting a 4-day gathering called “Unleash the Power Within” at the San Jose Convention Center. Witnesses say on Thursday, a crowd went to a park where 12 lanes of hot coals were on the grass.

Robbins’ website promotes “The Firewalk Experience” in which people walk on super-heated coals.

Witness Jonathan Correll says he heard “screams of agony.”

Fire Capt. Reggie Williams says organizers had an open fire permit and emergency personnel were on standby.

  1. Don’t try this at home! No one can run fast enough to avoid getting burned from red hot coals, no matter how motivated he is.

    1. You’re right, no one can run fast enough.  But you’re not supposed to run-you’re supposed to walk fast.  Running will push your foot deeper in the coals.

  2. Apparently Mr. Robbins wasn’t yelling “Run Forrest run” to his devoted followers as loud as Jenny.  “Stupid is as stupid does.”

  3. Does Mr. Robbins actually do any of this stuff himself or does he just get easily influenced and apparently  mindless flunkies instead?

    1.  I think the answer to that is obvious, There are some things people on drugs won’t do… But there are some things just plain stupid people will do.

  4. Hey Tony has been doing this stuff for large crowds for years and never an issue. theres usually hundreds of people doing this. it wasnt  just 21 people… there were hundreds and all were doing it

  5. i’m seriously thinking tony robbins and many other motivational and religious grifters should try to find honest work before their demise.  imagine his tombstone if he doesn’t
    here lies tony robbins
    motivational con artist

      1.  he may not be on the dole, but every citizen of maine is as maine is a beneficiary state and receives about $1.58 back from the federal gvt for every $1.00 sent to them from maine so unclench a bit and pick on the bankers and brokers for a change.  try to think of them as Americas elite criminal class.

        1. If people go there on their own and benefit from it, then who are we to judge?  He’s been around a long time and people love him and his talks.

      2. True, but then again, thoughtpolicemen, when one is lying beneath a tombstone, very few are “living.”

        1. Unless he forced these people to walk across the fire at gunpoint he didn’t “burn” anybody. Its sad to think how little personal responsibiliy people take these days.

          1. Sorry. Didn’t realize he had nothing to do with it and it completely innocent. My apologies.

          2. Funny how “incitement to riot” is a crime, yet “incitement to burn the snot out of yourself” is not.

  6. This smells of bad preparation and poor planning.

If done right, the ash that forms on top of the coals can protect your feet for a short but brisk walk through coals.

    However, I wouldn’t recommend it.

  7. I always wondered how those “COWARDS” in Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, could get people to strap on bombs and go out and kill themselves and their own people …………………………….. but now I have my answers.

    1. They get people to do it by advertising.  “Wanted-Suicide bombers.  No experience necessary”

  8.  Most of us learned by age 3 that fire is hot and burns.  I guess a motivational speaker can change all that “common sense”.

  9. Would of hated to be one of the emergency personnel that was on temporary standby.  It looks like they didn’t standby, but actually were needed.  What an event to have to work at.  Thanks for all you did and I hope your patients learned a valuable lesson that day.

  10. It’s weird that there are people out there that believe in this s***! Like the church guy who puts his hand on your head and pushes you and “YOU’RE HEALED” bout magin that one! I bet these stupid people also had to sign a lengthy contract so that Robbins crew are not responsible for anything.

    1. These are the same people who faithfully attend evangelical/fundamental churches and believe every word that comes from their pastor’s mouth.  They’re completely at the mercy of these so-called “men of the cloth,” who are only too eager to relieve them of their wordly goods.  Think Jim and Tammy, Jimmy Swaggert, Jim Jones, among many others.

  11. Burnees included noted agonized screamers Louie Gohmert, Trent Franks, Michele Bachmann, Allen West, “Sheriff” Joe Arpaio, Paul Le Page, Joe Walsh,
Glen Beck, Rush “I gots happy feets” Limbaugh…..

    1. Don’t know for sure, but the story says there were 12 lanes of coals, just guessin’ their lane would have been on the far right……

      1. Ha! Good one, although I think “lane” should be pluralized, given the nature of road hogs.

  12. Burning your feet as a form of personal improvement?

I see an analogy here for the obama recovery – Things are getting better by destroying the economy completely!

Obviously fools will fall for anything!

  13. It goes to show you that our country needs leadership, because people will fall for some guy  telling you to walk on hot coals.  Hello there HOT COALS next somebody will tell people to jump off a cliff because they can fly.

  14. Here is your motivational subliminal message people. I want all 21 of you idiots to go run to your banks and empty your accounts and mail it all to me!!!    LOL

      1. Any fool (except maybe you) can see that my comment was a joke!!  and not Political BS !!   I fail to see how my comment makes you or anyone else think I’m a member of the Tea Party.

Does every comment on every topic have to be about the same political garbage???

I’d challenge you to a battle of wits, but its clear you are unarmed

        1. Well, “fool,” perhaps you should reread my first post.  That was clearly an addendum to your post and a reference to the fact that those “idiots” could very well be Tea Partiers because studies have shown they are the least educated.  Get the connection now? Re. the battle of wits, feel free, but start by remembering that “its” signifies possession and is not the contraction form for “it is.”

          1. Ok you got me!! LOL  I thought that Tea Party remark was directed at me!!   Guess I stand corrected.

Ok .. I even crown you the winner of the battle of wits!!  LOL

          2. I’m not a bingo player and it’s been many years since this old great grandmother won anything, so I’ll accept the title.   I can understand the confusion re. the Tea Party remark.  Satire is sometimes too subtle and conveying it via a computer, rather than face-to-face makes it even harder to detect.  Your first comment was very “spot on,” and I loved it, so keep up the good work.

  15. Giving in to the hype of an evangelical or secular fool is something not to be done.
Remember that the minister bitten by snakes during a “show” that he claimed to be Biblical, died a few months ago.

  16. Apparently it can be done and HAS been done.  I wish this article would have mentioned whether Mr. Robbins has had seminars like this before and what the outcome was.  We hear about successful fire walking all the time.  I don’t think it’s fair to call these people stupid or on drugs.

    1. Ok-let’s call them “inexperienced” and re. the drugs:  if they weren’t on them before, they’re sure going to need them now.  Oxy’coal’don, anyone?

  17. As much as I enjoy the progressive reforms in California, they’re a bunch of friggin’ nut jobs.

  18. I am a registered democrat and that is too damn funny…seriously, sometimes the comments section is infinitely more amusing than the article itself!

  19. And what did these nut-jobs think was going to happen when they walked on hot coals? Common sense truly is gone in this world.

    1. There’s a trick to it; these little sideshows are generally about teaching it to the rubes subtly enough that they don’t realize they’ve been taught a trick.  Of course, if you teach it too subtly, they don’t do it right…

  20. Yes, the Democratic Party gave him 5 minutes to  find the most brain-challenged recruits he could find.  Old Tony looked around and behold!  There were the knuckle-dragging tea partiers, thinking they were going to be walking on water.  And Jesus was singing in the background, “Oh when will they ever learn?  When will they ever learn?”  Jesus was a Peter, Paul, and Mary fan.

  21. The truly scary part of this story is that all of the burned boneheads are eligible to vote, drive a car, and reproduce.
