BANGOR, Maine — Peter Duncan, the man who was stabbed in the shoulder Saturday afternoon, allegedly by his wife of 18 years, stood in court on Monday asking that she be released.
“I just want to request she come home,” he said. “We have no domestic violence. We have two sons — one is in Afghanistan and one is in college. It was a mistake.”
Jacqueline Williams, 45, of Brewer was arrested about 4:40 p.m. Saturday and charged with Class B felony elevated aggravated assault after she got into an argument with her husband at a friend’s apartment on Hammond Street in Bangor and stabbed him in the shoulder, Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards has said.
Williams reportedly ran to the kitchen, grabbed a large knife and swung it at Duncan, cutting her husband once on the shoulder, the sergeant said. Police found her afterward walking down Hammond Street.
Superior Court Justice Ann Murray did not grant Duncan’s petition, and instead approved the bail conditions requested by Margaret Gray, assistant district attorney for Penobscot County. The conditions set Williams’ bail at $5,000 cash or $15,000 surety and bars her from seeing her husband and two others and from going to her Brewer home or the address on Hammond Street where the stabbing occurred.
“It is the state’s position that this is a very, very serious matter,” Gray said just after handing the judge copies of photos taken of Duncan’s stab wounds.
If she is released on bail, Williams also will not be allowed to possess any dangerous weapons and is subject to searches, Murray ordered. Her next court date is Sept. 11.
Duncan, who was treated at Eastern Maine Medical Center on Saturday and released that evening, said after court that the judge didn’t understand that his wife is stressed out by having a son in uniform serving in harm’s way.
“She’s going through stuff because she has a son in Afghanistan,” he said. “That’s all.”
Duncan then questioned where his wife would stay, if she got out of jail, as he left the courthouse.
If she has no previous record and her husband has no fear of her-I’d suggest a thorough mental evaluation. A forgiving husband, a son in college and one in the miliatry serving his country generally does not point to a bad bunch of people. Give her some slack if she gets the help she needs. I work with gentlemen who’s son sits behind a machine gun all day in that same theatre of war. When he receives a satellite phone call it’s a great relief to him and his wife. Unless you’ve had a son or daughter in harm’s way-and I have not-the rest of us may not know what it might do to us. The whole family lives war to some extent when a loved one is over there.

I agree with LePage and others on this: “NO excuse for domestic abuse.” Both husband and wife need some serious counseling and wife needs to be held accountable for what she deliberately did.
