WALDOBORO, Maine — Maine State Police said one man is dead and a woman is being treated for gunshot wounds after a shooting Monday morning inside a home on Friendship Road.

Dead is Norman P. Benner, 32, of Waldoboro, according to Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland

Arlene Lawless, 25, of Waldoboro initially was taken to Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta and then transferred to Maine Medical Center in Portland, McCausland said. He said investigators are optimistic that she will survive her injuries.

The shootings were reported about 9:30 a.m. at a home at 2177 Friendship Road, also known as Route 220, when family members of the dead man went to the house to check on his well-being.

Benner and Lawless rented the home and shared it with the owner, Jeremy McPhee, McCausland said.

McCausland said investigators do not think that anyone else is involved in the shootings.

A team of state police detectives is working with the Waldoboro Police Department and Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office deputies to investigate the circumstances of the shooting.

No one had been charged as of Monday evening. McCausland said investigators hope to be able to interview Lawless on Tuesday.

  1. Please keep in mind these are someones loved ones.  Until detailed information comes out these negative comments only are causing more pain to their loved ones.  Pray for their families.

    1.  Not trying to be an arse or anything, but why would a family in pain care to read comments online anyways??? If something causes you pain, you stay away from it. Simple as that. Not all *comments* are going to be *positive* and *spiritual*. It’s a newspaper article…it’s media…not a condolence blog!

    1. WAY too much shooting and killing. I just read about the guy in Biddeford who saw the Batman movie. Sometimes I wonder if people are really born stupid or if it’s something they have to learn.

    2. Nothing wrong with you, it’s true. Historically when there is a depression (people will debate this but when nearly half  are out of work there’s no arguement) people get in trouble. Even people who work,  likely because they are forced to carry those who won’t even try to take care of themselves. The street I live on there are 10 residence, ( altho one is a secret to the town office but no one else in town) out of those homes only 3 have employed people. When you see these unemployed start showing up with boats, sea-do, 4 wheelers, motorcycles drive 4 or so different cars (BMW, Jeeps, Harleys), it has a tendency to drive people insane.

        1.  That is true. Especially up here. Always has been the case. People also have other options, too. Get OUT of Maine and better yourself. You CAN do it! There is a real world beyond here! It’s not easy in general in the country, but I’m sorry, this place is just downright DEPRESSING!

        1. At last you have invited me into a dual.
Now I never said it was a new Beemer, bike or jeep
neither did I say perhaps they supplement their income

    3.  Yep! Too many gun-loving freaks with deep issues. Guns that shouldn’t be in the hands of many that have them.

        1.  You don’t have to ban guns, just there are so many people that shouldn’t have them in their hands to begin with. Mentally (and emotionally) incapable of taking care of themselves, let alone have a gun in their possession. They should have to go through psychological evaluations.

          1.  Are you saying everyone go through a psych evaluation before purchasing a firearm?!?! Shouldn’t we extend that to motor vehicles, knives, baseball bats and the like? How about alcohol? A lot of people drink to much and do dangerous things that hurt innocent people. Crazies use weapons other than guns too.

          2.  Sure! Why not? – to all your questions! Should have to for attending college too since there are so many nutcases that end up there as well…especially the real colleges with dorms.

  2. where was she shot?  what part of the body?  What type of gun?
Just a guess here, pistol to her, shot gun to him.

    1. Kinda my thoughts where it says in the story that no one else is involved in the shootings. Also the family members were going to check on his well being? I feel sorry for all involved. RIP

    2.  Does it really matter??? Why do you need that kind of information? Why not call the police office and ask them? We know just as much as you do…Nothing.

  3. wow some ppl really can be rude..does it really matter what gun was used or what part of the body was shot? someone has lost a life here and someone was wounded and the someone who was wounded is a family member of mine. All u should be saying is u have the ppls family in ur thoughts and prayers.

        1.  It’s in the paper. Not everyone is going to give *condolences*. It is an article that people can give their comments on just as much as someone giving their condolences. You can’t control what people write. Go anywhere outside of Maine and you will see things in a much different light. Not everyone is going to be sensitive. That’s just the way it is. You can either choose to read it or not. If I’m grief stricken, I’m not going to worry about reading comments on the internet. Sorry!

          1.  i know ppl are gonna say alot of things on here. But the only point i was really trying to get at was why would u ask such question on what guns were used n all that.i just felt that was rude.
