ASHLAND – On July 27, 2012, Marie Alma Saucier Caron Goding completed her life’s journey. She was born May 27, 1916, in Wallagrass Plantation, the daughter of Marie Despres and Josephel Saucier.
During her lifetime Alma was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Many Saturday mornings were spent around her kitchen table as she baked bread and told many stories of her youth and growing up in the Long Lake/Fort Kent area. Alma’s interests were varied. She enjoyed people, social events with music and dancing. A talented and crafty woman, she sewed, knitted, gardened and took care of many and loved everyone. She was a good neighbor, a loving friend, a wonderful pie and cookie baker. Alma would often bake cookies and pies for her weekly social events with the senior citizens group in Ashland. She also participated with Aroostook Area Agency on Aging.
Alma was predeceased by her first husband, Joseph Caron, in 1984; by her second husband, Chester Goding, in 1994; and two children were lost in infancy, Albert Joseph and Clarence Joseph, and Alma never forgot their brief presence in her life. She was also predeceased by her brother, Henry Saucier; her sister, Clair Saucier Michaud; half brothers, Ted Chamberland, Wallace Chamberland, Alberie Chamberland and Leo Chamberland; and half sister, Laurette Chamberlain Picard. She will be greatly missed by her loving children and family, including Carlene Gallagher of Dothan, Ala., Geraldine and husband, Paul DeBacco, of Wethersfield, Conn., Eugene and Gloria Caron of Ashland, Terry Caron of Eugene, Ore., Lynda Caron of Eastport, Daniel and wife, Rose Caron, of Mesa, Ariz., Barbara Massengill, of Spring City, Tenn., and Cynthia Wilcox of Westfield; and her half sisters and brothers in Connecticut, Gilbert Chamberland, Maxime Chamberland, Antoine Chamberland, Azilda Samochiuk and Jeanette Nemeth. Alma had 15 grandchildren, more than 18 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Relatives and friends may call 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Monday, July 30, at St. Mark Catholic Church, Ashland, where a funeral Mass will be celebrated 1 p.m. Monday. Interment will be at Portage Lake Municipal Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of choice.
