BANGOR, Maine — The 18-year-old Bangor man being sought since late last week in connection to a rash of downtown burglaries continued to elude police on Monday.
As of Monday night, Jonathan Matute had not been located, a Bangor Police Department emergency dispatcher confirmed.
In a news release issued on Friday, Bangor police Lt. Timothy Reid said that Matute had been identified as a person of interest in burglaries that occurred earlier this month at two downtown buildings, and asked the public for help in the effort to locate him.
Matute is described as a white male with black hair and brown eyes. He is 5 feet 3 inches tall and weighs 170 pounds.
Matute last was seen in a gold four-door Buick Century reported stolen from the University of Maine campus on Thursday, Reid said. He said the car’s Maine license plate number is 5147SL and Matute may be accompanied by a juvenile boy and a juvenile girl.
The burglaries that police believe Matute might be connected to were reported on July 21 at the Coe Building at 61 Main St. and on July 23 at an office building located at 96 Harlow St.
Reid said that forcible entry was made in all the businesses and that electronics — including cameras and computer equipment — as well as cash were among the items stolen.
As part of the ongoing investigation into the crime spree, Bangor police executed a search warrant at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at an apartment at 19 Clinton St. and recovered several items reported stolen from both buildings, including computer equipment, cameras and checks, Reid said.
According to Bangor Daily News archives, Matute is a former resident of Greenbush. In February, he was fined $300 and ordered to pay $250 in restitution for a disorderly conduct conviction. He was fined $300 in June for assault.
He also is a former student of Orono High School, where as a freshman he was a member of the Geek Squad club formed to help service the school’s laptops.
Anyone with information about the burglaries or Matute’s whereabouts is urged to call the Bangor Police Department at 947-7384.

“on the lam”
I think this phrase was last trendy in 1945
It’s bizarre that the paper is reporting on school clubs that this boy belonged to in the 9th grade.
5’3″ & 170? I’m guessing he doesn’t run too fast.
