If you’ve browsed the seafood department at a local supermarket recently, you’re probably thinking that these are good days for lobster lovers. Both Shop Rite and Stop & Shop are running specials for Maine lobsters at $5.99 per pound.
Local wholesalers say the source of the price decline is Maine, where an abundance of soft-shell lobster has driven down prices.
“That’s the way it is,” said Robert Mayer, head of the Lobster Institute at the University of Maine. “There are huge numbers of soft-shell lobster — so many that the price is relatively low.” Mayer said he has seen lobster being sold as low as $3.50 a pound in Maine. He also saw a stunning deal while in Canada recently.
“They were selling all-you-can-eat Maine lobsters for $24.95,” he said.
But local lobstermen and wholesalers who purchase lobsters caught from Connecticut and Rhode Island waters say buyer beware when dealing with soft shells from Maine.
“In some regards we’re getting a higher price because our product is much better than what’s coming out of Maine right now,” said Mike Theiler, a Waterford lobsterman and vice president of the Connecticut Commercial Lobstermen’s Association.
A soft-shell lobster is one that has recently shed its shell to grow a larger one. A lobster in that state is weakened, said Bob Mitchell, owner of Champlin’s Seafood in Narragansett, R.I., “and produces less meat. Soft shells are also harder to ship and demand a lower price.”
“They are putting some on the wholesale market that are low quality,” he said. “The yield of the meat from the lobster goes down when they’re a soft shell.”
John Tarasevich, purchaser at Clipper Seafood in Narragansett, said he only buys lobsters caught along the Connecticut and Rhode Island coastline.
“You get what you pay for,” he said. “If you go to a local, quality fish market, you will pay more.”
Emily Lane, vice president of sales for Calendar Islands Maine Lobster Company and chairwoman of the marketing organization Maine Lobster Council, disputed the notion that Maine’s product is lower quality. It is more challenging to ship soft-shell lobsters than hard-shell lobsters, she said Monday, but many people prefer the taste of soft-shell lobsters, which are common in Maine this time of year.
“This is what people come to Maine for in the summer,” Lane said. “A lot of people prefer to eat lobster in the summer because it is sweet and succulent.”
A survey of New London-area clam shacks and seafood restaurants found lobster rolls ranging in price from $8.50 at Kelly’s on the Bank in New London to $19.25 at S&P Oyster Co. in Stonington, Conn.
“They’re super psyched,” baker Matt Potter said of customers at Kelly’s on the Bank. “They’re completely jazzed. Eight-fifty for a lobster roll is a great deal.”
Some other local lobster roll prices include $14.95 at Sea Swirl in Mystic, $15.25 at Captain Scott’s in New London and $17.50 at the Fisherman Restaurant of Noank.
As for the soft-shell Maine lobsters, Mayer, at the University of Maine, says supply is outstretching demand because of environmental and market forces.
“It could be climate change because they started shedding early, about six weeks ahead of time,” he said. “There’s also a relationship with the Canadian lobster processors. They had most of what they needed earlier so they’re not buying as much. … So we’re seeing low prices everywhere around Maine.”

Boo-hoo, Rhode Island and Patheticut.
My husband, his brother and my son’s catch is more than the entire harvest from those 2 states!
Are the waters warming up?maybe one of the reason why there shedding sooner…..?
Don’t they all come out of the same ocean????
They should do a blind taste test and post the results…
LOL..
The ocean is not “the same,” any more than soils and growth patterns are the same in even an acre of land.
A soft shell lobster caught in Maine waters tastes so much better than anything caught off the coast of Connecticut. The meat is much sweeter. Lobster is critically important to our state’s economy. We can only hope that this season is fluke.
I agree Soft shell Lobster taste much better and the less meat is very little really. All I know is Buy lobster get demand up and drive the price up with it! We need to help our fisherman!
Perhaps you should do a little study of the basic ‘Economics 101’ law of ‘supply and demand.
Because of the mild winter, there has been a record early overabundance
of soft shell lobster, which are always less desirable to the wider
market, in part, because they don’t ship well.
Soft shells are great if they are local, cheap, and super fresh, however
I prefer a hard shell any time of year. Maine lobstermen should take a break
and stop flooding the market and allow the demand to catch
up along with the shells.
More people would buy more and more often if the price was more doable. More ‘live’ tasty meat, fair price, less water on the plate equals your win-win.
‘Maine Lobster’ is its own brand. Connecticut and Rhode Island would like people to believe ‘Gulf of Maine’ is the same thing. It’s not. Maine needs to protect its brand by making sure what’s sold eveywhere is good quality
its own brand…..its brand…not it’s….It’s means it is.
Pardon my editor. IT”S inexcusable for an anglophile such as myself
any thought on the plight of our Maine lobstermen?
Maybe you should ask RevOlson since he’s more worried about playing grammar police.
Seems dwneast has given an opinion regarding the actual story at hand.
These Maine lobsterman that should “take a break” – what should they do in the meantime when this is their livelihood? If they don’t fish, they don’t get paid.
Are you going to pay them?
Diversify.
Diversify???? This isn’t a farm, you can’t just change crops on a whim. A lobster boat is good for one thing, lobstering. The time and money required to re-fit a vessel for other types of fishing would put most independants out of business.
…..
Not to mention that you have to have special licenses for different fishing industries. These are two seperate industries and should not be categorized as the same, Gadeal. To acquire special fishing licenses is quite and ordeal if you are able to switch. Nice thought, though. Lobstermen depend on their yearly earnings in just a few short months just as farming does.
Correct… It is impossible to diversify a lobsta boat… all ground fish were gone 20+ years ago…
Sell directly to overseas markets. They’ll pay whatever you ask it seems.
i had some the other day and they were so yummy and sweet. i prefer soft shell, you don’t get as much, but the meat is much better tasting. I think the others are jealous of our yummy Maine Lobsters!!
Yeah but the big difference is what kind of ka-ka is running in from shore. Maine lobster is best, soft shell or not.
Climate change and the warming of the ocean is real.
The climate has always been changing. If it wasn’t Maine would still be under 200ft of ice in July.
Actually, Bob, that was 10,000 feet of ice, and it wasn’t that long ago, geologically speaking.

George Bush and the Republicans disagree..
But scientists, you know the people who study things, agree.
Who really cares if a politician disagrees with science. The politicians are still wrong.

I’ve had some of the most tender soft shell lobster EVER over the past few weeks. I think they are just jealous. REAL lobster comes from MAINE!!!!
Maine lobster is the best and I will only eat it in Maine – knowing it was crawling not long before I’m eating it. The biggest disappointment I’ve had regarding Maine lobster was recently stopping at Reds in Wiscasset. Usually we have avoided because of lines and traffic, but on this day with few in line we thought we’d give it a shot. $16.00 (which seems high considering what lobsterman are getting paid right now) for a roll with lots of meat but absolutely the toughest, most flavorless lobster roll I’ve ever eaten. I feel bad that so many are coming to Maine and think this is what lobster tastes like. Just terrible. Go to the Keag in So. Thomaston for a truly good lobster roll!
The Keag. Fabulous.
Wait you paid _$16_ for a lobster roll? Are you not from around here?
Was the lobster roll 3-feet long? Was it covered in gold and jewels?
WOW
Buy more at the low price and enjoy. I bought some softhell lobster in Trenton,Maine and made a lobster sanwich. A big 10 pound lobster with had shell has be hit with a hammer to break up the claw. I know it happened to me once. Someone gave us this monster and we had to boil it. It did not cry it growled at us. The conn lobsterman are jealous.
Never boil lobsters….Steam in an inch or less of water…
You are right of course.
I was born and raised in Maine- Uncle was a lobsterman- been able to pick my own lobster since I was 4- boil them in seawater, never steam!
Nothing like a fresh boiled lobster from Maine served with a baked Maine potato !
Now if the Maine Lobsterman’s Association of even Gov. LePage were interested in “branding” Maine lobster, now would be the time. How many water quality tests would it take to show how polluted the waters off Connecticut and Rhode Island are? 1? I place some of the blame on our lobstermen. The Lobster-Fest is going on in Rockland this week, lobstermen are charging $2-$3/lb and check out what the festival is charging (http://www.mainelobsterfestival.com/main-events/food/) $10 mark-up on a 1lb lobster??? LOBSTERMEN, SELL RETAIL FROM THE DOCK! $4.50/lb, we’ll pay it all day, every day. We don’t want to pay a middle man for your product.
I was in Machias the other day and considered ordering lobster stew at Helen’s Restaurant, but on their menu it said “market price” instead of a number. So, I asked the waitress if market price meant the price had been lowered due to the low prices they were paying for lobster meat and she said that they were still charging the normal high price. In other words, “market price” is an excuse they use to mark up the price of lobster stew, but when the price of lobster goes down, they pocket the difference. That’s approach is part of what is hurting Maine’s lobstermen. If restaurant’s such as Helen’s “market price” would actually reflect the lower prices they are paying the lobstermen, lots more people would order lobster, increasing demand, and the price would gradually climb back to the point where lobstermen could make a decent profit. But it times of a glut in supply, if retailers such as restaurants continue to think only of their own bottom line and keep prices high, demand will remain static and the lobterman will continue to suffer.
Try the competition just down the street. They are having $10.00 lobster dinners and specials on some days for a one lobster dinner for $8.00 and a second lobster for $6.00 more. Tried several meals. YUMMY!! Also $.99 cheaper then the hot turkey sandwich meal!
Fresh caught soft shelled Maine lobster are absolutely the best to be had. Hard shells are good but not near as sweet. You get more meat from a hard shell but the flavor can’t compare to the softies we are getting out there today. When I order lobsters from a local lobsterman, I ask for either soft shell, if available, or a mix of soft and hard to make everybody happy.
Ugh, this is nothing new. It’s called nature.
“Lobsters “molt”, shedding their shells so that they can have room for growth the following year. This shedding usually occurs during July, revealing a new, soft shell underneath, thus the term “soft-shell”. The new shell will harden over time and as the ocean water gets colder.
A lobster that has shed its shell has less meat inside than a hard-shell lobster of the same size. This also accounts for the lower prices for soft-shell lobsters.
Although there is less meat in a soft-shell lobster, many people prefer the taste of soft-shell lobster meat, considering it to be sweeter and more tender.” ~www.mainelobsterdealers.org
Nice marketing try, though, Connecticut.
If you pay over 10$ for a Lobster roll anywhere, you’re a dumbass. They aren’t even that expensive all the way out in Kansas.
Kansas lobster are far too chewy for my tastes anyways. Yuk.
Sour grapes from Connecticut….Maine lobsters are the best in the world…Be sure to steam the lobsters…NEVER boil them in a gallon of water. I got three lobsters, half a dozen cherry stone clams, four lobster bodies (Four for a dollar) at Mclaughlins yesterday for $18.88…Can’t do better than that….
CT lobster men are packing it in… The lobster have almost been depleted… 12 years ago something killed off all the lobster in Long Island sound… the lobster never recovered, and the last 2 years have been worse…The article never mentioned this fact… Also, It was stupid for the CT lobster association chairman to make any claim about better lobster…
What a stupid article, or assertion by Conn fishermen??? You have lost ur market because of poor managemant and gross polluted water…suck it up and shut up !!!!!
why is it the Conn and RI boats are coming up and fishing in international waters off the coast of Maine??
Up until 10 years ago, Long Island Sound produced a lot of lobster and maintained a healthy lobster fishery. It has almost completely died off and marine biologists are still at a loss to figure out the reasons. If those fisherman still want to fish for lobster, they can’t do it there…
All great comments…….. many of us guessed that there would be an early shed, and delay of hard shell lobster here in Maine. You can’t safely ship a soft shell lobster much distance.
Many of us, also, hoped that the processing plant that Lobster Web, LLC – that they purchased from Bumblebee in Prospect Harbor, ME, and they received grant for – at Governor’s request…………… would be operational: Allowing an opportunity our fisherman would no longer have to sell soft shell lobster to Canada.
Canada, also maxed out early in soft shell lobster – they utilized their processing plants. Unfortunately – Lobster Web, LLC………… ended up in a bit of bind and shut down just as this early shed started. { Which may be a good thing …. in the end } If that had not happened this particular year, and they could have made payments to fisherman, this could have been a much different scenario; one that our fisherman, and that company could have seen profit in an ” unusual seasonal change “.
That’s not true about shipping soft shell lobsters. They will last if they are packed correctly. I live in Deer Isle and we ship tons of lobsters out each year. A friend of mine ships them out and received an email from the recipient in Nevada that her lobsters were still very much alive!
Anytime there is an El Nina year in weather, this is a possibility. It also the reason for the current drought situation in U.S.
It’s all true regarding softshells, but I’m paying 3.50 per pound for big ones in Swanville and they’re way good.
dont you mean WICKED GOOD!! LOL
Plan to eat as much lobster as I can when I get to Maine in late August!! Can’t wait!
NEWS FLASH: New Jersey and Pennsylvania lobster-fishermen have entered the “fray” and are also advising their lobster taste better than Maine lobster (you just have to use ketchup).
We’re standing by to hear from Wyoming and Nevada…………………..
Yeah but look at the stuff that gets pumped into the water off of Con and RI.
I would rather have clean lobster from Maine
Living in conn. is an adventure. I’ll pass on that.
Go buy a new truck in conn, it cost 5k more then the same new truck in Maine..
Have you ever been to a resturaunt that advertises real Connecticut or Rhode Island lobster?
The good old Long Island Sound the dumping grounds for medical waste! Keep those glow in the dark lobsters right down there in Connecticut
CT people have no clue what they are talking about! Nothing like trying to get your 3 minutes of fame.
Sounds like sour grapes on the parts of the other states. Jealous much?
That’s what I thought too.
A Lobster caught off the coast of New England is a Lobster PERIOD. They are all the same so cut the BS folks.
Of course the lobster is the same species. Do you want one fished out of Long Island Sound, where the Conn. River brings the “nutrients” down from Conn. and the North Shore of Long Island flushes its toilets? I hear the real good nutrients come from the sewers of New York City at the western end of the Sound. The prevailing westerlie winds stir the shallow Long Island Sound and provide a special taste to the seafood caught there. You can eat yours from there if you want.
If Maine lobster doesn’t suit, I hear if you saute them in the commode overnight, you can achieve that fresh caught Connecticut taste.
Do a Google search for “Moe Bolduc Maine”. Its funny.
Hey Moe, where’s Larry and Curly theses days?
And why do we care what other states think of our lobsters?
Ever heard of a “Rhode Island Lobster Deal” at Red Lobster? Ever sit down to a delicious meal of Connecticut lobster tails?
Yeah…thats what I thought.
Sour grapes from one state that is too small to really be a state, and another…well…its Connecticut.
conn. men? I’d say so.
I don’t care for other people tellin’ me not enjoy a couple of sheddahs.
Maine needs their own lobster processing plants !! Fishermen could be shareholders. Anyone want to start a business??
Someone should get Linda Bean in on this and start up a processing plant. It’s sad that Canada has and Maine does not…
Hellooo……Connecticut and Rhode Island lobsters shed too. What is being sold in those states are new shell lobsters!
Where in Canada are they serving all you can eat lobster?
It is either because of climate change or Bush. Both get blamed for just about everything. What ever happened to the art of innovative blame application or blame spreading like farmers do on the fields when spring cleaning of their barns.
And 2012 is more than half way behind us, yet the landing data for 2011 is preliminary. Maybe DHHS is responsible for this determination. That would explain it being late and for sure the finally tally would be wrong.
The lobster in the photo with this story looks to be right at the point of the most tasty undersize.
