BANGOR, Maine — The Facebook group Pet Lovers in the Bangor Area will show support for the recently approved Bangor Dog Park by hosting a Doggie Carnival fundraiser that will feature dog washes, live music and other pet-centric activities 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, at the future dog park site at Essex Woods on Watchmaker Street in Bangor.

In addition to the dog wash with hypoallergenic shampoo donated by Mutt & Jeff’s, there will be a kissing booth and bake sale, plus sales of Bangor Dog Park merchandise. Mainly Scoops will keep the site clean by providing pet waste removal services. Proceeds will benefit the Bangor Dog Park. Additional donations are welcome.

Although use of City Park land at Essex Woods has been approved by the City Council, no taxpayer funds will be used to build the park.

The Friends of the Bangor Dog Park is a volunteer group working to raise awareness and support to pay for fencing, installation, site work, trash receptacles and other improvements for the dog park.

Pet Lovers in the Bangor area is a group formed on Facebook as a forum for pet owners to ask questions, set up playdates and discuss local pet issues and services.

In collaboration with Bangor Parks and Recreation, Friends of the Bangor Dog Park is working to establish and maintain a dog park that will provide a safe place for dogs to play and enjoy off-leash time with their owners and other dogs. The Bangor Dog Park will be the only one to serve eastern Maine and the Bangor area. Fenced dog parks also exist in Portland, Bath, Kennebunk, Lewiston, Augusta and Belfast. The city of Belfast opened its Dog Park in 2008, using a similar process with a Friends group working with city government.

In addition to fundraising events, the Friends are seeking sponsorships and donations from companies and individuals. More information is available online at or, or contact Kevlene LaBate, 542-0015, or Crista Jakacky, 991-1444,
