BANGOR, Maine — Police have arrested a 17-year-old boy in connection with a July 31 fire at a James Street home. The teen has been charged with Class A felony arson.
Bangor police have not released the teen’s identity. The Penobscot County District Attorney’s Office did not immediately return a message left late Thursday morning.
Police and fire crews were called to 12 James St. at about 9:45 a.m.
“A mother came home to give her 17-year-old son a ride to work and smelled smoke,” Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards said Thursday morning. “She quickly discovered a bedroom in the house was burning and called for help.”
The woman’s son fled the scene, Edwards said.
The arson investigation by Bangor police Detective Cliff Worcester and the state fire marshal’s office led to the teen’s arrest on Wednesday afternoon, according to Edwards.
Edwards said he wasn’t sure where police found the 17-year-old, but that he remains in custody at the Charleston Correctional Facility.

Maybe it’s time that alleged or guilty criminals under the age of 18 get their name published for all of us to see. Sometimes public humiliation is what it takes to learn hard lessons.
To be humiliated, they would first need to know pride and shame. Many kids nowadays know neither. Many of them don’t care about:
Disappointing their parents
Having their name in the paper in the court news
getting suspended/expelled from school
getting fired
None of it means a thing to so many of today’s kids. It is sad but true.
