SCARBOROUGH, Maine — Students at a southern Maine high school may have to pay $100 fees to park their cars in the school’s lot.

WGME-TV said the Scarborough Board of Education is proposing the policy to help balance the district’s budget. During the past few years, the school had to cut positions and charge students $100 fees to play a high school sport. The parking fees could bring in about $30,000 if both of the school’s lots filled up with students.

The school said driving to school is a privilege, but not all students and parents see it that way.

More than 250 students plan to protest when the issue comes up for a vote Aug. 16.

      1. Some people need a good laugh now and then…..what better place then to come here and read an article.

        1.  I do read the articles. I enjoy the articles.I’m not the one complaining about the lack of news though, am I?

    1. Could becoming soon, to a school neared you.  I don’t know of a single school, anywhere, with adequate parking.

Follows on a recent news item where some are challenging added fees by schools as violating “free” (e.e., tax supported) public education.

      1.  when i went to foxcroft academy (did i just give a crucial fact away that might allow the BDN police to arrest me) we had plenty of parking.

      1.  Another myth.  The cost per student has increased faster than the rate of inflation for at least the past 15 years.  The schools are NOT going broke, they just want more for doing the same job.

  1. Crazy man. If enacted are the teachers, administrators and school board going to have to pay the same fee?

    1. Are you crazy? Of course they wont! they are
privileged dont ya know? This has got to be one of the dumbest think that I have heard! And to also charge them for playing a sport? I mean yeah to get a uniform if they need one but I am sure that isnt $100. And if you think about it it’s mostly Juniors and Seniors that drive to school some sophmores but not every kid has a car I didnt get a car that was mine until I was a senior I think. Anyway they will just park on the side of the road by the school anyway if they have to pay

        1. Find out what? My other opinion? Sorry if I dont think high school students should pay for parking but im entitled to my own views thanks! :)

      1. At UMaine, everyone pays for a parking pass (admittedly $50, not $100).  The only advantage is that faculty and staff get a blue pass which gives them closer lots.  We visitors get a black pass which means we’re relegated to the boonies.  And you dare not park where you’re not supposed to.

    2. The students are provided transportation.   Many choose not to use it for various reasons. As far as parking for employees go, years back the IRS wanted to tax the employees for the value of the parking as they considered it a benefit.

      1. Some might believe your story but i think your full of ka-ka. Maybe a student that walks or their parents drop them off should get a rebate for not using the busses. How about pay toilets, book rental, hook up charge for computers, a fee for janatorial services, snowplowing fee and a fee for heat. Oh,oh water fountain fee….

  2. OMG! That is funny. Charging kids to play sports. Now parking fees. Who the hexk is miss managing the budget in this district. What’s next a quarter for every sheet of t.p. ? Want to help your budget. Analyze what your administrator’s actually do and is it worth what you pay them?  I don’t know but it sounds like you don’t have anyone on the school board that runs a business, and you are letting your super run the board and the budget to the ground.

    1. I understand that many schools charge a fee to play sports (some also offer scholerships for hardship cases).  When our son played soccer at a Midwest HS 25 years ago, he was a goalkeeper.  They issued him a uniform including a team jersey plus one goalie shirt (which has to be a different color than anyone else on the field).  It was pretty miserable so we usually bought him a decent goalie shirt plus paid for his keeper gloves.

      Then there’s hockey …

      1. Get a grip. We< all that can afford buy equipment for our kids when they need do. My wife and I have also bought for needy kids when we could just so they could have the right things to compete when parent(s) couldn't. But, to have a school charge 100 bucks for kids to play sports or park a car come on. What happens when a awesome soccer player who wants to play and has a gift can't becuase mom and dad either can't or won't pay the jock fee? Wait tTimmy's mom and dad are loaded. Yet, Timmy sucks. Now. the talented kid has low self esteem and is more apt to get in trouble or worse. Listen if mom and dad can't afford hockey equipment and the kis has talent someone will be there to help out. If the kid sucks, has a bad attitude, is a trouble maker no one will. Drop the jock fee, and the parking fee.

  3. At the HS our kids attended, 25 years ago in the Midwest, parking passes were limited to seniors who lived more than several blocks away from school.  There may have also been preference to higher GPAs.  We lived four blocks from school so they never got passes.

  4. My daugher here in florida pays $70 per year to park at her highschool, $250 per year to be in marching band, $80 for yearbook, $100 for graduation fees (does not include tickets or announcements), various classes at school have additional supply fees that students are responsible for.  The days of showing up at school with a new lunch box are over.  Schools everywhere are looking for ways to “stay in business”.  The worst part is those families who cannot afford the extras and the amount of kids who are missing out on great high school experiences.  Wish I knew the answer….

  5. At the local high school many students travel by snowmobile in the winter.  Just don’t be on the trails going the opposite direction when school lets out. Wonder what the fee would be for that.

    1. Interesting.  I’ll bet administrators at those schools would be deposed if they charged for snowmobile parking.

    1. If my taxes were paying for that parking lot, they’d have to convince me otherwise…especially given the size of their lots.

  6. Now here’s a way to keep kids from going to school.  Make it unaffordable for them to take pride in their accomplishments.  Park less cars at the school so younger class mates have nothing to look forward to.  Now there’s some good honest liberal thinking.  Let’s change what works.
