MACHIAS – Eleanor Mulvaney Hersey, 94, passed away peacefully July 24, 2012. She was born June 19, 1918, in Pembroke, to Benjamin and Lelia (Leighton) Clark. She was the last in her era of the Leighton-Clark generation.
She was a graduate of Pembroke High School, marrying Aubrey Heslyn Hersey in 1938. During World War II she and Aubrey lived, worked and started a family in Massachusetts, moving back to Pembroke after the war. She was employed as a cook for Robinson’s Hunting Cabins, Dennysville, a packer for Sunset Packing Co., Pembroke, and wreath-making during the Christmas season. Eleanor was a wonderful cook, homemaker and baker. She made delicious pies that were especially enjoyed around the holidays and was noted for her home-baked rolls served at local public suppers. She would never have to look at a calendar to remember an important event such as a family or friend’s birthday, anniversary or holiday. She made sure that all were remembered on their special days by sending a greeting card or a gift. For many years during the summer and early fall she and Aubrey would enjoy the fruits of their garden entertaining many beloved relatives and friends at their Young’s Cove farmhouse, commonly called “The Lower-Forty.” She and Aubrey were great berry pickers and enjoyed each other’s company “berrying” throughout the Leighton point area. She was an avid Red Sox fan and enjoyed watching the games with her husband, and could be quite disappointed when they lost.
She was predeceased by her parents, Benjamin and Lelia Clark; her husband, Aubrey Hersey; brothers, sisters and spouses, Lena and Harry Chandler, Philip and Marguerite Clark, Wesley and Ruthella Clark, Berla and Charles Putney, Ethel and Kenneth Johnson, Bertram and Evelyn Clark, Rachel and Junius (Dune) Mills, and Carolyn and Clayton Dudley; and many loved nieces and nephews. Eleanor is survived by her daughter, Sandra L. Kolbjornsen of Nashville, Tenn.; and son, Barry S. Hersey and wife, Priscilla, of Bel Air, Md., sisters-in-law, Phyllis Ferguson of Sun City Center, Fla., Marjorie Rice of Wallingford, Conn., and Norma Mazzaccaro and husband, Sal, of Southington, Conn.; and grandchildren, Ned Kolbjornsen and wife, Christiana, Doug Kolbjornsen and wife, Jody, and John Kolbjornsen and wife, Monica, Sarah Kotan and husband, Koray, and Daniel Hersey and wife, Gina. As well as her great-grandchildren, Meghan, Jaidan, Danielle Lenard, Logan, Maxwell, Dylan, Matthew and Mia Kolbjornsen, and Megan and Abigail Hersey. We extend our deepest gratitude to our cousins, Patricia Crocker, Linda Church, Carolyn Mills, Cathy Stevens, Marilyn Leighton and Jennifer Clark who attended her during her final hours.
Graveside service will be held at a later date at Clarkside Cemetery, Pembroke. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to Dennysville Ambulance Service, 1935 U.S Route 1, Edmunds, ME. 04628. Arrangements by Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, Machias.
