PORTLAND, Maine — Police are investigating after a man picking blueberries on Hutchins Drive discovered skeletal human remains Saturday afternoon.

The man found the remains in a wooded area near the Portland Trail System around 4 p.m., Lt. Scott Pelletier said Monday. Hutchins Drive is located off outer Congress Street.

“It looked like bones wrapped in a blanket or something,” Pelletier said.

Police are working to identify the person, whom they believe is a female, according to Pelletier. An autopsy will be conducted Tuesday.

“The autopsy will give us a better idea if there was any trauma,” he said.

An anthropologist and a State Police cadaver dog assisted in searching the area, Pelletier said. Police suspect the body has been in the area since last fall.

  1. This is sad, another murder, possible, not sure.  I hope they find out soon who it is, so the family can come to rest.

  2. I pray that it is the young woman from Lewiston that has not been found   Her family needs closure

  3. It said the remains were of a woman, so the baby Ayla is probably not an answer to the identity??

      1. WLBZ2 in Bangor said the remains are that of a woman- this is in contrast to the 9:40 report of the BDN as compared to the 12:45 PM report of WLBZ, It would be wonderful to be able to take Ayla home, but whoever it is, I hope they rest in peace and give closure to someone who has been looking for them for probably some time???
