NAPLES, Maine — Law enforcement officials say a 24-year-old woman was killed in an ATV crash in Naples, Maine.
The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department says the woman and a companion were riding on the ATV on the River Road early Wednesday when it went airborne, flipped and landed in the Crooked River.
Officials say 24-year-old Shanan Loud of Naples was pronounced dead at the scene, while 28-year-old Johnathan Caswell of Naples was taken via LifeFlight helicopter to a hospital.
The sheriff’s department and Maine Warden Service are investigating. Officials say speed and alcohol appear to be factors, and that the victims weren’t wearing helmets.

People need to smarten up a little bit, an ATV is not a toy, it is a vehicle and should be treated as such, I understand the horsing around on them as I’ve done it myself, but use some common sense and know your boundaries if you are going to ride, especially with passengers. Oh, and for god sake DO NOT LET YOUR CHILD ride without you either riding with them on their ATV or leading on your own, regardless of how smart you think they are, all kids have kid moments where they do something stupid…
/end rant
I feel bad for the families that have to get that call…Accidents happen, but a lot of the time they were completely avoidable.
Speed alcohol and no helmet is not an accident. Age 24 is not exactly a kid. It’s hard for me to feel sorry when situations like this occur. The real sad part is someone soon will be drinking and driving and will die in an accident.
I feel bad for the parents for losing their child. If the driver was indeed drunk and speeding, the driver killed his passenger…so I understand the RAGE the passengers parents must be feeling.
I do NOT feel sorry for the people who drink and speed and kill people. People make decisions, good or bad, and trying to soften this sort of thing up will only prevent people from learning from such a stupid STUPID situation.
I was lumping this article in with the 4 year old that just died, that was the kid I was talking about. It was a rant, excuse the jumping around lol
Is there an atv helmet law in Maine?

“people please dont b so quick to pass judgement yeah he was drinking and speeding”
“maybe the wheeler broke or somthing at a high speed we dont know yet.”
Our society is doomed.
If “our society is doomed” it is because of the poor decisions made by the members of this society..
“people please dont b so quick to pass judgement yeah he was drinking and
speeding but he by all means was not riding out side his comfort zone i
know cause i have gone riding with him a bunch of times. ”
So what you’re saying is, traveling at excessive speeds while being under the influence is his “comfort zone” ????
Jason just happened to be lucky those ‘bunch of times’.
“This is not the place to say ‘I don’t feel bad’ or state your opinion on what should have or should not have happened.”
Says who?
When we lost our sister in a crash, the LAST thing we wanted to do was read about it. We relied on sympathy cards for our condolences. I can’t understand why anybody would come here for them.
