AUGUSTA, Maine — Maine’s public safety commissioner has nominated the state’s assistant state fire marshal for the top job in the fire marshal’s office.
Public Safety Commissioner John Morris on Thursday announced he’s appointing Joseph Thomas as Maine’s Fire Marshal. Thomas, of Vassalboro, has served as Assistant State Fire Marshal for the past nine years and is currently the acting fire marshal. Thomas is a former Portland fire chief and 28-year Portland Fire Department veteran.
Thomas’ appointment is subject to confirmation by the Legislature’s Public Safety and Criminal Justice Committee and the state Senate.
If confirmed, Thomas will replace John Dean, who retired from the post earlier this year. Dean was an opponent of legalizing fireworks — which was supported by Gov. Paul LePage’s administration — and was barred from testifying last year on the legislation that lifted the ban on them.
