SACO, Maine — A Saco teenager was charged with assault and disorderly conduct Wednesday after he grew out of control at Sweetser, police said.
Sweetser is a center for troubled youths, Saco Deputy Chief Jeff Holland said.
The teen, whose name police aren’t releasing because he is a juvenile, was yelling at staff members and demanding that police arrest him, Holland said.
The suspect, who was also using foul language, allegedly threw a cup of coffee at a staff member and damaged a wooden chair.
Police summoned the boy for assault and criminal mischief but did not arrest him, Holland said. He was transported to Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland, where he remains pending a hearing which Holland expects to happen in the next few days.
The deputy chief said that hearing will determine whether the teen will remain at Long Creek or be allowed to return to Sweetser, whose staff has guardianship over him.
I swear and throw coffee at my staff all the time…it’s called management!
He isn’t management. Only case management which means he can’t throw the chair or coffee. Any how it sounds more like a tantrum.
Maybe the coffee was too hot and the chair was too hard.
if he wasn’t arrested, why was he transported to a youth dentention facility???

sweeters is a joke, how well is there staff educated?!?! i’ve visited there place in belfast & the staff look younger then their clients, looks like they just got out of middle school & from what i’ve heard they have a big turn around because they overwork the staff and they get burnt out… who’s watching sweetser staff?!?!?! cause lord knows the state doesn’t have the money too!!!

The good citizens (read taxpayers) of the State of Maine pay money to Sweetser because they CLAIM they can manage disruptive youth. The big question here is what exactly are we getting for our service provider dollar?
If the staff at Sweetser are not prepared to deal with “disruptive teenagers” why does Maine send them there?
Sounds to me like the kid has been dealt a pretty crappy hand his whole life. I am a strong believer of the whole ”kids are products of their environment” argument. This kid has a long road ahead of him, hopefully he gets the help and support he needs to grow into a productive adult. Unfortunately in this day and age, the chances of that are slim to nil.
